First of all, thanks to all who helped me out with the problem of the parking brake light/ABS light being on all the time along w/ speedo error below 20 mph problem on my 99 4 wheel drive unit. Most of you told me to check out the rear wheel speed sensor, first trying to clean it & if that failed, replace it.

Well, I had to replace it. Was a little uncomfortable that 2 local Dodge dealers showed the wrong part number for the speed sensor. I didn't notice it the first time, but the part number is stamped into the metal shroud that protects the sensor. The correct part number is 56028187 AD. Both dealers showed it to be 56028229 AB.

Just got done installing the new sensor & everything is working again. Oo. Oo.

Thanks again to all for the assistance.

Mike. :D :D

That part number got you the whole sensor and not just the metal cover? I've go the same number on mine, but it's AC.

How the heck do I get the sensor out? I took out the bolt, took off the metal cover, and unplugged the wiring from the sensor. I'm pretty sure I need a new sensor... ... . now. I seem to have only removed half of the sensor. I assume the rest of the plastic comes out? Do I have to pop this thing with a hammer a few times to break it loose?

mreiter,

Twist the sensor and pull up. Mine had a nut on top holding the wiring bracket, and another stud bolt into the housing. Twist some to gain leverage, it is sealed with an "O" ring once these bolts/nuts are out of the way.

My dealer sold me part # 05014787AA. It says it's a wheel speed sensor. There was a part number for with abs and a part number for without abs, but he didn't have the part for with abs, so he sold me this one.

Will this work? Looks pretty similar, but it's been redesigned with a better shield on it.

Here's a picture of it. It looks a lot like what goes in the rear diff. Just wondering if it will still work if it's not for ABS.

Sorry about the bad pic quality. I didn't want to open it till I was sure it would work.

EDIT - crappy picture removed. Check out the better one below. /EDIT

Marc,

First of all, the part number I listed gave you the shield plus the sensor. This is the serviceable level of the part. You cannot get them seperate.

GFoley was correct. There is a stud with a nut on top. Removing the nut allows the brake line to come loose. Removing the stud allows you to remove the sensor.

It is a little tough to get out. I personally do not believe it needs to be this tight, especially with an o-ring, but I'm guessing the housing does not have an o-ring groove in it - thus the tight fit. I had to wiggle it back & forth a few times to get it out.

Putting in the new one was easier. I put a little lube on the o-ring & it slid into place (with a little persuasion ;) ;) ) . The service manual says torque the stud to 18 ft-lbs.

Hope this helps.

Here's a better pic (I actually took it out of the plastic this time :D )

The paper that comes with it says it's a replacement kit for the "sensor-rear wheel speed". The kit was created because of damages to the "sensor-rear wheel speed" connector during installation or replacement. The new sensor cover has been changed and the connector was turned 90 degrees. It comes with a wire harness extender to reach the sensor in the new position.

Wow... I'm not having any luck getting the old sensor out. . This is what I've got out so far :

The cup at the bottom is still in there and won't come out. It basically broke at the o-ring and the rest won't come out. It will spin free but won't come up. Almost like it was held in by a clip or something. I might pull the diff cover tomorrow to see if I can pry it out from below (assuming I can reach it over the ring gear).

I had to help my dad move a refrigerator and other stuff today, so I drove it like it is figuring that cup would plug the hole. No such luck. . When I got out of the truck when I got home I immediately smelled gear oil. Must have blown by the cup. I doubt it did any damage. On the plus side I didn't put a single mile on the truck today. . Of coarse I could tell how fast I was going either.
