2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission A/C problems

My truck did the same thing last year. I took back to the dealer and they put a dye in with the new freon, and it worked all last summer, now, the truck is warm again. Back to the dealers again this year I guess... :{

Probably the evaporator core which is housed in the HVAC box under the dash. Requires pulling the dash, about a 10-12 hour job. Mine needs a can of R134a every few weeks. There are no signs of leakage anywhere near the condenser or compressor or lines. Our trucks trap dirt and stuff which holds moisture and accelerates corrosion of the evaporator core, resulting in pinholes which slowly leak the 134.

One of the recent TDR issues covers some details on the procedure. I'm not looking forward to it! Yes it will be ME that does the work. I've had success in the past on other vehicles. It just takes time and patience. No way am I gonna let a dealership service dept or anyone else tear into my dash, with resulting squeaks and rattles. I'm sure there would be a pail of leftover bolts and misc parts when they were finished too!

Well, that's my expectations anyway. :)

I know that I can do the job and do it right. I just got a 2nd vehicle to drive so I don't care how long my truck is down.

A/C leak

I had the same problem too. Took it to the dealer and they did the leak test and evacuated then charged back up with some yellow looking dye added to it. I am not sure how long it will last, but I took it in just three weeks before the 3/36 ran out and the service advisor said that if I have anymore problems with it, it would be covered because now I have documentation of service under the warranty period. Hope that's true :rolleyes:

I bought my '01 w/ 3996 miles on it in Sept. of '02 and it already had the tag on it about dye in the refrigerant. Then, last spring A/C wouldn't work, so took it in under warranty and had refrigerant added to it. Now, this spring same thing. My appointment is Friday. My buddy says it is probably the evaporator. I'm hoping if it is it will be covered under warranty since it has had previous problems, my mileage now is 44,000.

Here's a good spot for me to chime in.

Do NOT, NOT, NOT, NEVER, NEVER use any sort of sealant in your A/C system. Not only does it void the warranty (dealer will have to replace EVERYTHING, but any reputable A/C shop wouldn't work on it because it also voids the warranty on his equipment. Yes, they do make such things as sealant detectors.

I recharged the system and will see how long it takes for the system to leak down. I'm still waiting for the previous owner to send me the paper work for the extended warranty he had on the truck.

I have the evaporator leak also. I've been adding 134a every 3-4 weeks until I can find time to replace the unit. Leak detaction die did not work for me. I ended up buying an electronic leak detector and could detect the leak by inserting the probe into the ac outlets. The right of center outlet, nearest the evaporator, had the highest leak concentration.

Just a few words about refrigerant...

A little less cools much better then too much.

Yes about pulling the evaporator core. It is easier to pull the motor then pull the dash apart :eek:
