ac will stop blowing air for no apparent reason and the light on panel stays on. Sometimes minutes or hours later it starts blowing again. Any ideas why this is happening?

Yes we have the same thing going on on a 2003

Yes we have the same thing going on on a 2003, so do yu guys think that it is just low on 134A?

Oo.

This problem has been around for a long time. Here are some other threads on it:

After 3 years and 60k miles this evaporator freeze finally happened to me. I was driving home from a trip to Southern Kentucky (Corbin, actually) in 88 degree weather. A/C was on fan level 3, non-recirc mode. After about 2 hours suddenly the air flow through the vents dropped WAY off and I started to get hot. At first I thought the blend door crapped out, but switching to "recirc" mode I could hear things move around. Then I remembered the evaporator freezing issue. I pushed the button for the A/C compressor to turn it off, and left the system in recirc. Since the evaporator was full of ice, the little bit of flow coming from the vents remained icy cold, and gradually increased in volume over a period of several minutes until it was blowing full-force again. At that point I turned the compressor back on and everything was great.

Personally, I think it's a minor nuisance and won't take any steps to try to correct it (I sure as heck don't want to tear my dash apart!).

Blower

I posted this for a co-worker with a 2003 4x4 CTD. We should have mentioned that it is not the core freezing up. It appears to be a wiring problem. He mentioned that if you bang on the dashboard, the blower will come back on, sometimes momentarily. The dealer wants $1200. 00 to fix it. Does anyone have a similar problem?

Sounds like a wiring harness problem or the blower motor resistor. Here is the thread that will help you find the short in the wiring harness. I would try the harness first then change the resistor. I'm going through the same thing right now. My blower quits every once in awhile on the high position. I haven't been able to get it to quit on any other blower speed. I'm checking the wiring harness today.

Exact same thing happens to mine. It's been getting progressively worse. I've been told recharging the system helps keep it from freezing as often, but I can't understand why.

I've learned to deal with it. I certainly don't want some tech tearing apart my dash.

Wiltcher,

I just got done disconnecting and checking my connection between the wire harness and the ignition switch. I found a short in the connection. The part is $55 and I have it on order and will be in tomorrow. Its definitely a fire hazard and would encourage you to check it first before you start changing parts out. I thought mine was the blower, but it's not. Sking actually had his truck catch on fire. Here is the thread that will help you find the short. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159656&highlight=blower

a/c problems

My '03 2500 has been giving problems, I too thought that the controls in

the box had gone bad since the blower still operated, but no air was coming from the vents. I turned off the A/C and after a few minutes air would continue thru the vents and was very cool for awhile. I figured then that

it was freezing up. It did this for three days and now is operating OK.

If the compressor is not cycling off would this cause the evaporator to freeze up? I also dread the thought of someone removing my dash which usually results in a $1000 shop bill. Also why would it start back to working properly?

55,000 miles on the truck. I might add that it would only take 5 minutes for it

to freeze up and feeze tight in 15 minutes.

Yep its the wire harness I know first hand. Fix the plug!!!! When it shorts out the dash will go up in smoke and melting plastic. . Its not fun when this happens on the road at 75mph. Trust me It will catch fire if not fixed. I have some nice pictures of what melting plastic will do to your skin when this happens. :{ OOOPPPS Im not allowed to talk about that due to the conditions of my sealed settlement from D. C. :-laf

Sounds like you all are going on about TWO differant issues. YES low CHARGE causes freeze over PLUS there is a UPDATE on relocation of the FIN TEMP SENSOR. Its the ac thermostat. The 05 up trucks its in the new location on the evaporator. I had mine done last year under warranty. Just a LITTLE low freon charge causes freeze over.

You're right we are talking about two different issues. Someone is talking about freeze over. If you read Wilchers post you will understand that his blower is shuting off or not blowing air. On freeze over you will still have the blower running, but the restriction causes a decrease in air flow. So I think its safe to say that if your blower is still running its a freeze over and if the blower motor quits intermittently its a short.

AC Freezing Up

I just had this fixed, it was low on R134. It would freeze up and stop blowing. I would move the temp control to full heat and suffer until it started blowing full blast.

Adding the R134 worked. That was 6 weeks ago and no problems since.

I live in Texas and it has already gotten quite warm, should I say hot.
