I remember a couple of years ago you mentioned that you were having AC problems. Did you ever get the problem fixed? I'm asking because I started having AC problems late last summer, and had to take the truck in for service a few weeks ago. The AC had these behaviors: Output from console and floor vents would drop below 30*. Changing the thermostat setting by one notch or the fan setting by one notch would result in a 40* temperature shift in the output air. The AC would also freeze up after about 1 hour of use. With the fan set at high, and regardless of the temperature setting air would quit coming out of the vents after an hour of operation. If I turned the AC off, the fan would start blowing air again in about 10 minutes.
I paid for the standard AC service. It was about half a pound low and had no leaks. I got the truck back and the problem persisted. Took the truck back and the dealer replaced the evaporator. They said it was a sensor/regulator problem. It was also the last warranty service I got, because I now have over 85,000 miles. I had the "Max Care" warranty with covered me bumper to bumper except for a $100 deductible.
Since then the AC has worked well, though the temp still tends to rise when I sit at a stoplight and the AC is on fresh air. But the temperature fluxuations during standard operation are gone. The output temp when using fresh air, highest fan setting and coldest temp setting while driving at 45+ mph is about 49*. If I drop the fan to the lowest setting the temp drops to about 40*. I also seem to be getting better air flow out of the passenger side vents. Not sure if it is significant, but I no longer get the loud pop/clap sound when I turn the AC on. This appears to have fixed my AC problem, which is good because they had to take half the dash apart to get to the evaporator. It's not just a matter of accessing the evaporator from the engine side.
For those who are still curious about fuel economy, I took several trips with tows this year and got around 13. 5mpg towing 12,000,000lbs over 1000 miles. Empty I was getting about 17mpg pulling the empty trailer. I got close to 18 with two insulated totes in the bed. Total weight was ab out 4500lbs. I now have 4 depressions in my bed where the corners of the totes sat on the rubber bed liner. On my last trip I visited family and was unloaded. I made it from Fort Worth to the Ozarks of Missouri on 3/4 of a tank of fuel, about 530 miles. On the return part of the trip I decided to take the scenic route down south through Eastern Oklahoma (through the mountains and Ouachita National Forest) and purposely keeping the RPMs below 2000 whenever possible. I got between 20 and 21 over 550 miles. I've been adding 16oz of Power Service every other fill up, with the occasional Howe's Meaner Power Kleaner thrown it.
Hope you're AC is fixed, DP. I think mine is. That's got to be an expensive out of warranty repair.
