I have 1/16 to 1/8th of an inch of vertical play in my ball joints. I have 170K and have not replaced any front end component except the track bar (5) and the steering stabilizer. The steering does not seem to be bad and the tire wear is very even. I want to put on another 40k over the next 6 months and then get me a new 04.
