What does happen if you add trace amounts of acetone to your gas or diesel? The autor of this artice insists large mileage gains. What is your opinon?

Disclaimer: I realize any moron can post articles on the web but this one is at minimum worth the time to scan through. I found a couple things that are flat out wrong in his/her mechanical related statements but I'm by no means educated enough to argue the acetone issue.

I posted about this same thing several months ago (last year?) after a feller next to me at the fillin' station with a new 3rd gen mentioned that's what he was doing. The general consensus here was that adding such a thinning agent to your diesel was not a good idea, but the quantity (a few ounces per tank) was probably not significant enough to make a difference. Either way, I'll run bioD before I add acetone to my diesel!

I think someone mentioned that the idea came from its use in gas engines and some benefits were found there.

I can't imagine that a few ounces per tank would make much difference in mileage, but the guy filling up next to me said he thought it did, and made the engine run quieter (a 3rd gen!?). I'd like to talk to him again in about 100K miles.

I did this to my 1990 5. 8L Ford F-250 a couple times in college. I did a lot of driving around town and with a heavy foot. Seemed like a little better power but not much of a milage increase in that situation. I let a buddy borrow it to go on a longer road trip, he put some in the tank and claimed he got 20mpg with it. I was not there so I don't know, I quit doing because I did not know enought about it and my Ford was my only transportation while I was in school. I find it hard to believe that a couple onces of acetone will help milage that much.
