Hello,

I am new to this site... my first post... and just ordered a 2007 Megacab 2500 with 5. 9L, 48RE, SLT, and several options. I've heard vaying stories of when Dodge will stop building Rams with 5. 9s and when the actual 6. 7 production begins. Some say they will stop on 1 Jan 2007, but the EPA web page says that manufacturers only have to have 50% if their sales in compliance with the emmisions by 1 Jan 2007.

I am buying the truck in Germany through AAEFES Car Sales (in the US Air Force stationed here until 2008). They tell me that the 6. 7 isn't even available for ordering until 1 Jan 07 on the 2500s and will be an option for the rest of the 2007 model year. They're also saying that the standard diesel through the 2007 model year will be the 5. 9L.

As for me... I want the 5. 9 and the 48RE (although the new transmission sounds SWEET). I want proven technology that has been perfected and not deal with first year model teething pains. Buying Microsoft products (not to mention a Ford truck) in the past 20 years has burned me out on beta testing the latest technology and dealing with bugs. But that's just me. The 6. 7 might be an awesome engine, but I'd rather take advantage of the huge aftermarket for the 5. 9 and the superb reputation that it has.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this subject. What is the no kidding story on when Dodge actually switches over to the 6. 7 as the sole engine in it's 2500/3500 lineup? When is the no kidding time when the 5. 9 will no longer be offered in a Dodge Ram?

Everyone I seem to ask gives a different answer... what's the real scoop on this?

It is my understanding that the switchover will be 1/1/2007 because of the new emissions standards that take effect on that date. I would have to assume that this would be just like the 1/1/2004 switchover to the 50 state legal 325/610 engines for the 2004 model year. Every 2007 model after 1/1/2007 would be a 2007. 5 to us.

It is also my understanding that Windows Vista is bug-free! ;)

AFAIK the very latest date for the switchover with be Jan 1. It probably depends on when they run out of 5. 9's - they'll make sure they won't have a bunch of left overs on January 1 so it's possible it will happen before then. If it were me and I definately wanted a 5. 9 I'd get it ordered ASAP.

OK- here is what I have read and understand about the 5. 9/6. 7

The 6. 7L will be available as a 2007 model in cab/chassis only. Transmission choices will be the Aisin 6 speed auto or the G56 6 speed manual

Currently there are 2007 5. 9L pickups being built. The 6. 7L pickup will be available as a 2007. 5 (2007 1/2) model and drive through your choice of G56 manual or 68RFE 6 speed auto.

The actual availability of 2007 pickups with the 5. 9L will be determined by when the supply dries up due to the end of production-by the end of 2006-and the switchover to start of 2007. 5 6. 7L. You quoted that "the EPA web page says that manufacturers only have to have 50% if their sales in compliance with the emmisions by 1 Jan 2007". From what I have read (and my information could be incorrect) the EPA regs control engines BUILT after 1/1/07.

Hope this helps and is accurate.

John

Have you called any stateside dealerships to compare with the Aafes price? While Aafes has good prices some dealerships may be able to beat it (Dave Smith).

It's my understanding that if you are assigned a vin# and von. (vehicle order number),the parts are available and are designated for installation into your special ordered vehicle. Keep in touch with your ordering service. By the time my #'s were assigned,my vehicle was built and loaded on the train. It's sitting at Dave Smith Motors.

I sent Robert (the editor) an email today asking him if his contacts at DC could provide any further details on the switchover - here is what he sent back:

All trucks MANUFACTURED after January 1, 2007 will have the new engine. This means, if someone wants a 5. 9, they should buy it now - off of a dealer lot - as we can only imagine that there is a two-week process time for engines shipped from Columbus to be installed into the truck. Factor in the holidays??? It looks like their time is up.

It may be different this time around, but when I was searching for a 2004 305/555 motored truck in late 2004 I found that the production lines shut down during late November, so ordering the truck I wanted was out of the question. It took a lot of searching to find the truck I wanted sitting on a lot. As already stated, if you want a 5. 9 buy it now, but it's likely to be one that's in the inventory now.

I'm inclined to think that you guys probably know more about this than my AAFES Overseas Car Sales rep, bless his heart, but he seels Fords, Harleys, Buells, and Jeeps too! I'll wait and see what happens, but I think there's a good chance I'll get a phone call in the next week or two where I either choose between cancelling the order or being a proud owner of a Cummins 6. 7. Will wait and see how it plays out. The truck was actually ordered last Monday. Nothing to lose... I made a big deal out of wanting the 5. 9 so I get my deposit back if I can't get the 5. 9 and don't want the 6. 7. Have to admit, despite the beta testing fears, the more I read about the 6. 7 and the 68RFE 6-speed, the more I like it (except for the emmissions crap!).

Follow up... I used the search feature to find more posts related to this topic. The order for my new MC with the 5. 9 went in on 28 Nov. I also recall the guy at AAFES estimating that the truck will be built in Jan or Feb (his NY office said not before the holidays). Based on what I've read, hope is fading somewhat that I'll get the truck I wanted with the 5. 9. The whole reason for getting this truck now while still in Germany was so I could get the 5. 9... . plus I'm getting a hell of good deal! If I can't get the 5. 9 then I'll probably either wait and get the 6. 7 when I get back to the States in '08 or get a used 5. 9. Will post when I find something out, but I'm half expecting bad news on this.

Hello,

I know you are overseas. And I too use AAFES at Mac Dill AFB, Tampa.

Here in Clearwater, Florida we have a Dodge Dealer that offers First Responders /Active Duty Members / Retired US Active Duty Members. New 2006 or 2007 Dodge CTD Trucks or Cars at cost and you get the holdback.

Its called www.vetbuyusa.com This is a real deal. The Dealer at least sells a Truck and it adds to the total sales.

I want a 2007 Dodge CTD truck with the new six speed auto transmission. So I'm waiting till the new 2007 model year.

Without stepping out of bounds on our sight, if you would like to ask any questions. Check the link. Or just E-mail me. I'm in no way attached to this Dealer or any other Dealer... but I would be proud to pass on the word.

Earl,

God Bless

Thanks for the advice Vetguy... but I've got a great deal through AAEFEs and sticking with the one I ordered.

Someone said on another site that Dodge quit taking orders for the 5. 9L trucks on Nov 29th. Mine was ordered on Nov 24th and I think by the dealer to the factory on Nov 28th (once they confirmed I have the money to buy this thing). So I should get the 5. 9L.

Can anyone out there confirm this 29 Nov date as a fact?

Nov 29 was the last day to order a truck with the 5. 9. Anything after that will be the 6. 7.

I tried to order a 3500 4X4 last week with a dealer in Ohio. I still can not get the order placed. I would bet the 29th of November is correct.

Ordered 11 Dec

According to the web tracking of my AAFES New Car Sales order, it shows the truck was ordered from the factory (and accepted) on 11 Dec. They swear up and down I'm getting the 5. 9/48RE.

Well see...

lebar,

I was just on Dodge's web site, and the 5. 9L is one of the options (only with the 6-speed manual) listed for the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500.

If you're looking for a 2500, take a look.

I believe there's a $3000 cash back, also.
