Maybe I'm crazy and I am not sure if it actually helps or not but with every Dodge Cummins diesel I have owned 1993(100,000 miles),2000(160,000 miles) with zero problems and 2006 I add about a quart of diesel fuel to the engine oil just before I change it. With the engine up to full operating temp. ,setting in the garage at idle I pour the diesel fuel in and let it idle for a couple of minutes, shut truck off, pull drain plug and let drain for about 30 minutes before installing new filter and oil. It seems to really help clean a lot of extra sludge from the engine and the oil pours out like varisole. Like I said maybe I'm nuts. Maybe I'm doing more harm then good.

Any thoughts? Thanks,Rob.

i have done it but just not on my diesels and not with #2 fuel... . In the mid 90's i had a thunderbird turbo coupe i had bought and i did purchase some stuff off the shelf, i think it was called engine flush, dump in the oil and let run for 10min then drain... I haven't seen any of that stuff in a very long time in a parts store so not even sure if it is available still, i would think there would be something for diesel engines, especially one that has been neglected in between oil changes... I don't see what it would hurt as long as their is no load on the engine either, but my set isn't big enough to try that theory :-laf

RFraser you are correct it will cut out sludge that usually doesn't come out with a oil change but i always take a trip to town and back then do a oil change that way its hot and most likely any sludge will be ready to come out.

i have never done it to a diesel, but on any of my older chevy's i have always added about half a quart of ATF and let it run, then SLOWLY pour a bit in as i run it through the RPM band a little bit. 5 to 10 min max with some in the oil, shut her down, then empty her out.

the detergents in the ATF clean GREAT

I don't see how your practice could hurt anything, since you clean it out at every oil change. I've always been leery of using flush products on an older engine, though- break all that old crud loose and plug up an oil passage somewhere!

I think it has a lot to do with oil quality and change habits. I've seen some engines cruddy inside after one year, and others with 200k that were clean inside.

Me- I normally follow the 7500 change from the manual, but got tired of seeing the new oil black the next day (these CRD's really dirty the oil!). So last time I changed oil, drove a couple hundred highway miles, then changed it again. So now it's back to brown again. :)
