Is there a way I can add limited slip to the rear of my truck without re-gearing it. I bought the truck used and not having it is driving me crazy. I have to put the truck in 4wd when it is wet to pull into traffic. However re-gearing it is around $1k. I am not sure why you would ever buy one new without a limited slip. In an un-related but still gear driven question. Why can you get 4.10 gears on the new trucks. If you get a Cummins you are stuck with a 3.42. I understand you get worse fuel economy on the highway but I would rather have a 4.10 in a heavy duty truck. If I wanted a car I would get a Silverado.

Yes you can add a LS without re-gearing. Newer trucks have a 6sp transmission so they have lower first gear and more gears available with a smaller spread to stay in the sweet spot for towing. 4.10's aren't as needed like these older 4spd trucks.

Yes, there are options for adding an LS diff without re-gearing. An easy way is find one in a salvage yard that does have an LS. Are you don't have the LS in yours? Have you pulled the diff cover an checked? The LS's in these trucks are not like the older ones, they are a TQ bias and work a bit differently.

If you think adding an LS will allow pulling into a street quickly on slick roads that won't happen. The bulk of the weight in your truck is on the front wheels, the rear is way light. On slick roads 4x4 is the only option.

The 4.10 ratio is an available on the new trucks with the right option groups selected.

X2 ... on what the 2nd paragraph of post #3 says, mine dose not want to move on wet grass without engaging 4X4.

I know for sure mine does not have LS. It is just 3.73. So I wanted to add it. On my only 01 24v I had 4.10LS. Rarely would I have to engage the 4x4 system. That truck was the best vehicle I have ever driven in the snow. I drive from the springs to Denver to pick up my in laws at Christmas time in 06 when the roads were closed. That thing was a beast.

Don't waste money on a stock unit. Put a Detroit Truetrac in. Big difference between 2:1 and 3.5:1 torque bias ratios.
