Last Sunday the wife, 2 grandchildren and I were headed to some friends' house in Ft Worth when I realized I was low on fuel. No problem, the Dallas Flying J is right on the way.
While the tank was filling, an older gentlemen in a 2nd Gen CTD pulls up and is waiting his turn for the other side of the same pump. He asks me, "Doesn't your truck take diesel?". I say, "Yes it does. " (I guess I was being a bit dense. ) He says, "That's not diesel you're putting in it!"
To make a long story short(er), I hike back to the shop to see if they can help. The mechanic there is not sure but says he would try, but he had no way to get the truck back there. We finally figure out that his forklift + my tow strap would do the trick. I hadn't started the truck and wasn't about to.
We put the truck over the big-rig pit and lower a plastic 55-gallon drum into the pit. He finally finds a small enough hose that I manage to get pretty deep into the fuel and begin syphoning it out. (I didn't get gas in my mouth! At least something was going my way. )
I have no idea how much gas I put in the tank, but it was a bunch. I was so flustered I didn't look or even grab the receipt from the pump. All I know is the drum had 3 or 4 inches of fuel (or something) in the bottom when we started. When it quit draining, the drum was over 1/2 full.
I wanted to buy some PS, but they didn't carry it. Instead I bought 2 . 5 gal bottles of Howe's Diesel Treat
The forklift towed me over to the big-rig pumps where I dumped in both bottles of additive and then pumped in 35. 1 gallons of fuel.
With 36 gallons of fuel & conditioner, I don't think there could've been more than 3 or 4 gallons of gas left in the tank, at most.
All I know for sure is that while my mileage appears to be down a bit on this tank, my truck has never run as smooth and quiet. Apparently the additive is doing the job.
This whole episode was just icing on the cake for my "hell week". Saturday morning early, someone (probably kids) stole my tools out of the back of my truck and attempted to break into the cab. All they succeeded in doing there was screwing up the front passenger door handle & lock knob. They also bent the sheet metal below the driver's door handle. The cop says they were trying to open my truck the same way they can open a Chevy.
