I built Dieselminded's heat shield out of 1/8" alum. diamond plate, put in the BHAF. A week or two later I bought Piers 16 cm housing, the one on special that is ported for improved flow. Driving w/o a trailer the only differences I saw were just a slight more lag on the turbo and it's a bit quieter than it was with my stock air box and a KN filter. Hooked up the horse trailer and headed for the mountains. One hill that is about 6-7 miles of steep grade - interstate with 75 speed limit. Stock turbo/air box with KN I could hold 65 in 5th gear, same hill, same load I was down to 50 and had to down shift, I just couldn't drive lighter footed in 5th and make the top of the hill.
Power mods: 11 plate, slid partly forward with adjusted gov. lever, 3k gsk, afc springs, 16. 5 timing.
The only part of Piers directions I didn't follow was I didn't take out the boost line to the AFC. I just plugged it on the turbo end in case this didn't work out, then I could just bolt up the old housing or if I could afford a new turbo that happened to be waste gated.
Anything else I did wrong? I'd be happy with a little temp drop, but I wasn't expecting it to be way worse.
