I'm on my 5th CTD having all four generations and overall the 16 with Aisin is by far the best Amazing power and comfort.
I just bought some acreage and would like an older "work" truck while developing it.
My uncle from Iowa sold everything and I inquired about his truck.
01 3500 SLT DRW QC 4x4 with 6 speed manual and only 45k miles.
Overall it is in pretty good cond with a couple of small dents and slight surface rust on the lower part of the doors. It was used on the farm so a good thorough cleaning and detail is in order, but it will look pretty nice after.
It has a gooseneck ball and 5th wheel rails, grill guard and side steps. Everything else is stock and it has never been modified for performance. He bought it new in 01.
Oil and filters have just been changed and 2 new batteries. Tires are ok, but will probably add new bigger tires.
From reading the forums it looks like the lift pump and inj pump are the main concerns. The trans is the NV5600 I believe and think this is a pretty stout reliable transmission?
KBB value puts it in the $9k range but looking at auto trader, they go all the way into the mid $20k.
I'm buying it for $9500 so I think this is a pretty good deal.
What do you all think? What do I need to plan on replacing or watching?
I plan to keep my 16 but it will be nice to have a truck to work and not worry about messing up my new one.

I think you have an excellent truck. I have an '02 with 6 spd manual with over 250,000 miles and still running strong.

The VP44 fuel injection pump (used on '98.5-'02 trucks) is the weak link in some cases with this engine. It would be worth your effort and expense to replace and relocate the lift pump (if it is still the orignial on the side of the engine block) to the frame rail with a Fass or an Airdog lift pump. Having reliable fuel pressure to the VP44 fuel injection pump is very important in order to get a long service life from this pump.

There is plenty of available information on this forum about the issues with the VP44 fuel injection pump.

You will not regret buying the truck.

sounds like a smoking deal! change all the fluids if its pulled most of its life. i changed mine at 53K and rear end stunk.I dont remember what the NV5600 uses (i think its just ATF) but its cheap compared to replacing it

The 56honey uses Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid. There are other oils used, but that's the original spec.
Definetly look into a standalone fuel filter/ lift pump.
