conversion 6.5chevy to 5.9 cummins?

The only problem I have had with my conversion is in getting the cruise to work. The 91 Intercooled truck I got my wiring and motor did not have cruise. It was a manual transmission. I bought a new computer forthe 91 and all the cruise stuff, but it still does not work. Were these trucks not available with cruise and a std transmission.

From what I have been told, cruise came only on automatics from 89 to "early" 91, 91. 5 it was an option on both auto and manuals. Did you replace you brake light switch ? they are different on cruise trucks.

I am in the same boat with my early 91, had the cruise working then it died. I think what I am going to do is install a cruise servo from a 1987 down dodge and use a cable drive version, I have a speedo pickup with both electronic output and cable from a 89 ramcharger. I will splice in the 91 wiring into the older servo. Bummer is I just bought a new cruise servo and speedo pickup for my truck:confused:

After a day with my bud at the dealership, I think I am trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I have a 91. 5 intercooled motor and wiring and bought a new engine computer. My motor did not have a tach or crank sensor. The computer will not send out a cruise signal. He called Mopar and the seem to think that the non-intercooled used a control module under the dash and the intercooled used the engine controler. I spent a ton for a ecu and all the cruise stuff and now it does not work. I might try the regular 1st generation board.

If memory serves, the gas control module needs an imput from the Throttle position sensor for the cruise. You might give my idea a try, no computer needed, just an old fashioned mechanical cruise control servo. Also the wiring is completely different on the 89 to early 91s, the under dash cruise control module fits 90 and early 91 only :{ :{ ( I spent a week trying to find one)

I found the under dash unit at the dealership for the 91 down. I think I can adapt it into the harness. I will go to a wrecking yard to see if I can find one and a woring loom to cut out. They are found on several diff cars, trucks and mini-vans.

I do not remember them all but pickups and 85 to 88 dodge mini-vans was one. I think some of the 2. 2 equiped cars also. I will check next time down there. The part is NS1. The are high $. I get a good discount and my cost is still $110. He had two of them in stock. If you can't find one let me know. Mark

Mark, I spent the better part of the afternoon looking for a cruise control module with no luck. The mini & full size vans must use the ECU to control the cruise. It looks like the 91-93 mini vans use the same servo, but no cruise control module like the one that is on my truck. So if you can find out which Chrysler products use that module please let me know.

Called the dealer and here is the number 4312957 and applications.

86-87 mini van with 2. 2 or 2. 6 4 cly

88-89 Horizon or Omni 2. 2 (dealer add on)

90- 93 dodge pick-up with deisel

Let me know how you do because I will need to get a plug in for the wiring harnesses in order for mine to work.

Im really putting the cart before the horse but what the heck.

My 83 Crew Cab has cruise on it now.

The donor truck is a 91. 5/Getrag with no cruise.

Will the old mechanical cruise servo do the trick here? Speedo cable out of the T/C into the servo and Speedo cable out to the dash Speedometer.

All the other wiring should stay the same right?

PS. Im picking up a NV5600 to use in my conversion. This should not matter as the speedo comes out of the T/C anyway. Im keeping that all mechanical since I have a 91. 5 wiring harness with no ECU.

What do you guys think?

You should be ok with that setup. I am using the 91. 5 wiring , computer and all. I do not htink they offered cruise on a 5 speed in 91.

Mark

whoever is giving you info on this cruise control module is wrong. He might be talking about the servo not the module under the dash. I spent all day saturday in the junk yards looking I found lots of mini vans and horizions that you listed which cruise, NONE of them used a external cruise control module. I talk to my buddy at the dealer, the module is used on ONLY 90-91 Dodge Cummins truck with automatic trans. From 91. 5 UP Dodge uses the ECU to control the cruise control. So I am back to square one, I will just wire in an old style cruise servo with a speedo cable, and that should work.

Kyle,

That is what I was thinking, just the old fashion mechanical cruise no TPS needed no computer needed.

The only electrical should be the brake switch and either the tree mounted cruise "stick" or the steering wheel with the switches for the cruise on it.

I prefer the sport steering wheel from the 83 CC. Looks like a Tuff Wheel kind of. The other wheel just reminds me of my daily driver UGH!

By the way the NV5600 is home!

Well got my OEM cruise control to work on my early 91. It seems that the blower motor and the cruise control servo are powered by the same fuseable link. monday that link fell apart and i had no blower motor. It had broken a couple of months ago and I was in a hurry, I just cut out the bad section taped it together. Well I installed a new fuseable link and, had heat and all was good. Today I am driving and was writing down a phone # on a piece of paper and using the steering wheel as a table(yea I know, but what the heck I had a pop on the other side :) ) and I hit the cruise button by accident and away we go. So now I have cruise and heat.

Well, my old Dad always told me that sometimes even a blind hog finds and acorn once in a while! glad you got it fixed. I have not had time to look at mine yet. I was never pleased with the perforance of my crew cab. I was comparing to my stock 92. I had put on the 12 cm housing and adjusted the pump like instructed on one of the TDR welp pages, but never could get the thing to run over 10 lbs of boost. I dropped it off at the local desiel hotrod shop and told the guy my problem. He said he could fix it. the desiel guy did a good job on it. Now it will put a smile on you face when you nail it. It gets 24 lbs of boost with no load at no problem. I think I will need the cruise for sure now.
