HI all,

Recently joined TDR as a new owner - purchased a 2018 2500 tradesman manual transmission before they were gone for good.

My truck has *almost* all the options I wanted, but not limited slip. Can I add the factory LSD to the non LSD axle, or is there another solution (short of $3000 to add an ARB Air Locker).

I appreciate the help.

You can add what ever ya want. Just be sure to use a shop that does R&P changes on a regular basis. Setting up R&P takes patience and talent.

Don't be surprised if they do not re-use the bearings/races so expect the cost of a set up kit in addition of labor and limited slip of your choice.

I have nothing to add here except my nomination for your avatar.....for avatar of the year......:)

Setting up the AAM after a carrier swap is super easy. Much eaiser than a Dana axle. Well within the ability of reasonably skilled DIY person.
Now if your regearing at the same time I'll agree with you to get a R&P person. Getting pinion depth with a crush washer requires some experience and reading a pattern is a whole different skill. Neither is required to do the carrier swap though.

I agree and disagree. OP's truck is new with warranty. Best to go with a reputable shop.

Crush sleeve is to set pinion bearing preload not pinion depth. A carrier swap still requires skill. The pattern, gear lash and bearing preload is still a requirement.

I have swapped gears in my 04 aam and i dont think i would do it again. A full weekend under the truck. Need a tool to hold the yoke so as can tighten or loosen nut. To set rolling torque i used a beefy 1/2 drive ratchet and 4 ft cheater bar. Breaker bar flexed too much. Crushing the sleeve without over crushing pita!
Installing oem ls from aam does not require removing yoke though. Pull axles, check back lash on gears before taking anything apart. Loosen retainers for bearings, take note on preload of retainers for reassembly. Pull pig, swap ring gear, reassemble, set back lash, and preload retainers, install axles. Dial indicater is best used for back lash. Mechanic skill level on the higher side needed.

I've done numerous carrier swaps. The pattern has always been correct once the backlash is set to what it was before the swap. For the AAM the install manual states set for zero backlash and then tighten the pinion side spanner nuts 4 flats on used bearing and 6 flats on new bearings. Every AAM I've dooe has come out correct following those directions.

Excellent advice and thank you everyone. I think I am going to go with the eaton TrueTrac - we live up in snow country so the limited slip will serve me better than having to lock and unlock.

I am sure this is good info but requires a skill level (like you have) to confirm. My point was to caution the faint of heart, that it is not a simple r&r, that specs need to be adhered to and a small box of hand tools wont get it:).
