Guys,

I had posted earlier this year looking for input on rear seat DVD players and got some pros and cons from some members. After thinking it over I started watching e-bay and found factory add-on rear seat DVD players anywhere from $200. 00 to $900. 00. They are all for Quad Cab trucks, none on there for Mega Cab's. I called in a favor from a Mopar Parts Buddy and between the pair of us we figured out that if you purchase the correct bracket and shroud then the rest of the kit is OK. With that in mind I bid on and got a system for $200. 00 bucks plus $20. 00 in shipping. The bracket and shroud that I have ordered will cost $157. 40 so I will have the complete set-up for $400. 00. I feel that is a good deal and beats spending $1100. 00 at the dealer.

If any of you have questions or want me to document the install please let me know and I will be happy to do it. It may be a few weeks before I tackle it as I have a Painless Wiring Kit and an Engine Brake to install at the same time and only want to take my interior apart once.

My grandkids will be ecstatic... ... . Oo. Oo.

I would also be interested. Would also like the shroud and bracket part numbers because I have been thinking of doing the same thing.

Mega Cab Shroud part # 68000467AA List Price $42. 75

Mega Cab Bracket part # 68000466AA List Price $154. 00

I was looking over the interior trim that needs to be removed and spotted the grey push fasteners in the headliner. They are recessed so I will cut or drill a 1/4" hole in the center of those so that I won't damage the headliner. I will remove the rest of the push fastener when the headliner is dropped. I think the smart way to handle the headliner is to drop the rear seats all of the way down and then recline the front seats all the way back and then the headliner will have a fairly flat place to land.

The part number for the grey plastic push fastener is 1AY22BD1AA. List price is $3. 00 each. I got three so as to have a spare.

Later on today I will post the link to the instructions for you. It will be a bit before I tackle this project and will take pictures when I do it. If I screw up and fold the headliner completely in half, I don't want you guys to miss any of it. . :{:{

Was the wiring included in the kit? I have been searching for the wiring to run into the REC navigation radio. Will you only have audio through the headsets?

Thanks for the info! Pics would be great!

mwilson,
yes , please post pictures. I bought a VES system a year or so ago and have not installed it yet. Been trying to get the nerve/time to take down the headliner. Though my bracket/ system is different, the install directions you posted are very helpful for the headliner part. Curious what your shroud part looks like and what its dimensions are.

good luck with the install.

The wiring harness is included but it is a stand alone DVD player. It only has three wires when it is all said and done, Constant Power, Keyed Power and Ground. The audio will either play through the headphones or the radio which is done with the included FM modulator. You pick the FM frequency on the side of the modulator that you want to use when you install it. In this area 88. 1 works pretty good but we don't have a lot of FM stations so conflicts are minimal. :)

Why is yours different??? You should need the same bracket and shroud that I have if you putting it into the Mega Cab in your signature. See what part numbers are on the two boxes, maybe you wound up with a Quad Cab kit instead. I will take some pictures of the shroud and bracket for you tonight as the parts are home now.

If yours is different for whatever reason, maybe I can find you some more specific instructions if needed. One major change for me is the Center Dome Light has to be moved back about a foot. The shroud is made to accept the dome light after you lengthen the wiring harness for it. :)

The VES (Video Entrainment System) is factory installed and way different than the accessory model. Some have installed it after the fact like I am trying to do. The VES truly integrates with the sound system, no RF Modulation. It plugs right into the radio. You have the choice of any 2 sources on the speakers or headphones. What I mean here is unlike most rear DVD systems, the kids (or headphones) can listen to FM radio while you listen to SAT, CD or ipod. Or the kids can listen to CD while you listen to radio. I imagine the kids could listen to the SAT while you listened to radio or CD. If the kids listen to the radio, it shows the station on the DVD screen and they can control things with the remote. It was pretty cool when I tested the system when I first got it. I still need to install the darn thing.

The bracket is similar to yours but has the mount holes/tab for the VES player. Depending on if quad or MEGA or sunroof or not dictates which bracket and headliner you have. That is my issue, I have a Mega with no sunroof but the headliner is supposed to bulge down a little for the bracket and VES player. The headliner is about $900 with the correct cutouts/moldings. I might have to cut enough out of the center section of the headliner to make the bracket fit, then make a shroud with the same material to fill in the gaps. I need to visit the upholstery shop. Making a custom shroud should be cheaper than replacing the headliner.

I have not done a fit check yet to see how much of the bracket really interferes with the headliner. Based on what I have seen, it might be OK near the front of the bracket mount but might hang lower near the rear of the bracket. Also. . I lose my rear map lights unless I modify the bracket to move the system a little forward... . or modify a shroud like yours to fit.

Here is a link to some of what it looks like. I can email you the PDF manual for the system if you like. . and how it installs into the durango.

This is a link to a guy that installed one. I think you may need a membership to view it. You will also see some screen shots of the SAT being played for the backseat.

Mr Fixit, I am sorry that I missed the very important VES part of your first post. It is a familiar term as I have that VES and MyGig system in my new Town & Country. Once you hit 50 I'm finding that I miss important little tidbits like that, Wow... ...

Do you want me to put a tape measure to anything while I take the pictures?? More than happy to help in any way that I can. I see that you are on the Left Coast so I don't see your post until the next morning. With that in mind I plan to be in the garage all day Sunday so let me know what you need above and beyond a standard picture and I will do it for you. Will do the first pictures in the morning so that if you need more info or pictures I can get them to you later in the day. Won't get to it Saturday as I have promised to take the wife shopping ... . Oo.

If you would not mine getting me some measurements of the shroud. I think the VES player is a little longer than yours , at least it looks that way from pictures and I am not sure about the width. I guess for the length, the player area and total length inducing the light. Good luck, I hope it goes smooth for you. Interested in seeing pix of your install.

Thanks again

By the way, there are some better (more robust) aftermarket headphones than the ones that Dodge provides. So make a note that as soon as the Dodge ones break (and they will) - do not go to the dealer to purchase new ones! You can purchase aftermarket units that will hold up better and cost significantly less.

Yep, I'll verify that the headphones are not proprietary. One trip I had a visiting kid and needed three headphones. I grabbed an extra set of headphones out of my Honda and all three headphones worked just fine in the truck.

I'll also reiterate that the integrated VES is great since the kids can listen to Disney crap in the back with the headphones and my wife and I can listen to the Big 80s in the front through the speakers. It's like the kids aren't even there... :)

I noticed that the headphones are light duty both with the VES in the Town & Country and the add-on kit for the truck. The non-VES system that is going in the truck does have a switch on the player itself that turns the FM modulator off so that you can have the radio playing your rock-n-roll, Howard Stern or whatever and the kids can hear the movie thru the headphones. That is one feature that I insisted on and searched hard for. :-laf

My 06 Dodge Caravan had the rear DVD but lacked the headphones, transmitter etc. so everybody had to listen to the DVD and after you heard Nemo, etc. for the third or fourth time it kinda' got on the nerves.

And last for now*

I will leave boxes open for now and if you need a more specific area, I will get it for you tonight.

Mike. :)

Wow. . those are good pix. . I need to dig out my unit and measure it. The length is longer than I thought.

Thanks
