Thoughts on Biodiesel

Bio-diesel Avalibillity In Ohio

Does anyone know if additives designed for Petro diesel have the same

effect when used with biodiesel?

Actually most that have done the research and testing will tell you no, they don't have the same effect for the most part.

They may increase cetane (not needed with biodiesel) and may marginally increase lubricity/detergency(also not needed with bio use). They will disperse water just as they would in petro diesel. However, most importantly, traditional anti-gels do not work on biodiesel. Power service makes what they call Arctic Express Biodiesel Antigel, however it's designed to work with b20, and all it does is severely depress the gel/cloud points of the petro diesel portion of the mix, thus effectively lowering the overall cloud/gel point.

Very recently - like within the last 2 weeks, Primrose has supposedly come out with a biodiesel additive, as well as a company in england. I believe the one in england actually claims to have designed their product to work with b100. Not sure about primrose's yet.

Moral of the story though and bottom line - if you aren't running b100, your traditional additives will work on the petro diesel PORTION of the mix, and thus can affect your overall mix.

Thanks, I should have been more specific in my question, I was wondering

about the cold weather aspect of additives. Good to know they are making

specific antigel formulas for bio.

They 'are making' and 'are available' are hugely different phenomenon ;) We'll see, I'll definitely be excited if they do come out and actually work.

For the record, b20 is good to about 5-10F without additives without issue - so by this time of the year most people can run any bio blends they like. B100 starts having a problem around 35-40 depending on it's basestock.

We will be handling Prirose Bio fuel addtives shortly. They just came out with them in the past month.

Greg!! Welcome to TDR! Good to see you here, and glad to hear the primrose bio additives are coming out shortly. George had mentioned it to me a few weeks ago, but never confirmed if they were actually designed for bio or if they worked on the petro portion of the mix.
