I ordered a Smarty and Bob threw in an adjustable boost elbow, said that I would benefit from it. Until then, I had never heard of such a thing. Can someone explain how I would adjust it? or is it supposed to be adjusted correctly from the factory?

There is an allen screw on 1 end, and on the other end a small pin hole drilled into it. I'm not sure I quite understand how it works.

I did a search, but I didn't come up with anything.

Nate,

The pin hole bleeds boost pressure to atmosphere. What it does is bleed off some of the boost pressure being sent to the waste gate actuator to delay it's opening and increase manifold pressure. Turning the allen screw adjusts how much pressure is bled off from the waste gate actuator. Think of it as a variable orifice.

Hope this helps,

Chris

They usually come adjusted to approximately 30 psi. Tightening the allen will raise that If you have a stock HX 35, 35 psi is the upper limit to preserve efficiency. 30 psi would be better with small injectors.

Leave the stock elbow in! The boost elbow will will not give you the performance for sacrificing your turbo... ... ..... :-{}

Yeah everything is stock other than the Smarty programmer... . which is kick *** BTW, though I'm not sure my transmission agrees with me.

If you get bigger injectors you'll have to make more boost to keep those temps down. I don't know if the Smarty will defuel if temps climb too high. Time to research that.

Though I have to say my stock turbo makes 31 with a non adjustable elbow. If it fails on me I guess I'll have to get a better turbo. What would I ever do?

No, Smarty does not defuel on high EGT. There is no T/C connection to the ECM.

Jim

My right foot defuels just fine though :D I keep a close eye on the temps when I'm pulling the trailer up a grade.

I was wondering... can I tow with the Smarty on program #9? With the Superchips, it had a weigh limit, though I towed with it on the highest setting even still.

Nate,

How much extra HP does the Smarty give you on #9?

Last I heard it was around 60-70 Hp. According to Bob Wagner the Hp gain is about the same for all Catcher Softwares. However, there is a pretty big difference in the torque curves. The higher the SW number the lower in RPM the torque comes on.

Jim

thats 60 to 70 hp that you most definatly feel in the seat of your pants.

and the increase in fuel milage is noticable also, if dont drive like you stole it all the time, thats my down fall..... heavy right foot.

Eddie

I'm pretty easy on the go pedal. I like getting good fuel mileage. Though that goes out the window when I'm towing and I see a Ford or Chevy pulling a hill. Then I smash on it and blow by them.

How much smoke can you make with the Smarty? I want the HP gains as much as I want the ability to make lots of black sooty smoke. Mine doesn't do to bad right now but no real clouds of it. There are a few ricers around town that could use a cabin full of smoke. I figure if I can't drown out their crappy music with my radio I'll drown them out with smoke.

It smokes pretty good on my truck, though so did the Superchips.

It has great power. I'm not sure how long my transmission or rear axle will last though...

So the HX35 has a "limit" of 30psi? If I adjust the elbow so I can only hit ~30psi, I "should" be all set right?

Like PC12Driver says, 30 is safe. You can go to 35 psi without problems too, if you need more cooling. After that the temp of the charge air rises to high & you get no benefit.

I put the elbow on. That rubber hose to the wastegate is "smooshy" and didn't really tighten on the elbow that great. Guess that's normal?

Seems like I'm still only getting around 25psi of boost. I must have a leak somewhere.

I also have a smarty with the new boost elbow that I have not yet installed. How do you get the hose off the old elbow it appears to have a tension band that has to be cut off to remove. Are you guys replacing the hose with a new one when you install or how do you remove the hose from the existing boost fitting?

Just pull. It should come right off the elbow (those bands don't work real well). Once it's off the band will slide right off. Then just replace it with a regular hose clamp.
