I need some more opinions guys. If you guys stood a ruler on top of the brake pedal rubber pad and measured up to the center of the hole on the bracket on the brake pedal arm where the cable goes through, what is that distance? The instructions say to start the truck and have someone push the brake pedal down as far as you would in a panic stop situation. Well with anti lock brakes on a 2001. 5 3500 in a panic situation one would assume that you are going to try to push the brake pedal through the fire wall. The instructons say to adjust the bracket so that the bracket will move between 2" and 2. 25" and no more than this in an attempt to keep from breaking the cable or damaging the unit. To get this small amount of throw my measurment is 8. 25" from the top of the brake pedal pad to the center of the hole for the cable. This puts the bracket up very high and there is nothing directly in front of the bracket to mount the cable clamp to. I was going to fabricate something to put there to mount the cable bracket, but I thought I would get some opinions first.

Thanks guys

The thing that I had to figure out is not to push too hard when you are testing brake travel. It's possible to keep applying pressure on the pedel, and get more and more travel. I don't think you would ever push the brake this hard, even in a panic stop. If you adjust the cable for that much travel, the sensivity is too low for normal driving. I have the bracket mounted just below the bend in the brake pedel arm. I have an older unit, and the spec was 1" for full travel. I have heard that the design was changed and is now 2", which seems to be what your instructions indicate. Be patient and get it right. Once you get this adjustment made, you'll never have to mess with it again.

Good luck

klenger is correct... the cable adjustment is critical for accurate brake proportioning. Once adjusted correctly your Ultima 2020 will perform better than any other unit on the market.

The first Ultima 2020 I had listed a brake arm travel dimension of 1. 5" to 1. 75". A replacement Ultima 2020 came with different travel arm specifications... 1" to 1. 125" For obvious reasons this unit is harder to setup properly due to a reduced adjustment window. On a Dodge Ram the bracket must just contact the bend in the brake arm to be "properly" adjusted (or close to being properly adjusted). As klenger stated, Jordan Research again changed the brake arm travel specification... to something like 2" to 2. 5" I believe... Mr. Jordan told me it was required to be able to accommodate installation in the new full sized GM trucks.

The Ultima 2020 installation instructions are very explicit in the setup procedure... re-read them until you fully understand what you need to do to effect a first class installation.

WMann,

Almost directly out from the brake pedal on the lower edge of the knee bolster is a hold down screw. That's where I attached the metal bracket(flat metal piece) for the cable clamp on my unit. I did add an extra hole and clamp (Radio Shack)to insure it wouldn't slip and upset the adjustment.

On my wheels, the main bracket is just a little over 7. 5" up from the top of the brake pedal (measured along the front edge)to the bottom edge of the bracket mounted on the arm.
