If you like a challenge, are mechanically inclined, have a little time and don't mind buying some tools, I'd say go for it! I just completed the following on Wednesday:
advanced timing to 16
valve adjustment
tap kdp
new serpentine belt as I put it all back together.
I couldn't be happier. It was a whole lot easier finding TDC with the timing gear cover off. I was able to avoid the whole timing pin ordeal. I read on this for at least a month before jumping in. Never regret it!
About a week ago I installed the 3k gsk, moved the afc forward and discovered I have a #8 that was full back. No wonder I couldn't get any fuel.

It's pretty amazing w/ the plate in the middle, really strong. Gotta take it easy til I get a DTT... . it's always something.

Opening the pump like that was pretty spooky at first, but was a great experience and am REALLY glad I jumped in. Be patient, have lots of documentation and you'll do great!
For tools: I picked up a couple good torque wrenches off ebay. I bought the 'timing kit' (SP500, I think) and feeler guages from snap-on. Having the right tools for the job makes all the difference.
