Can someone tell me the advantages/disadvantages smarty has compared to say a powermax or something similiar and how do they differ when looking at timing, pulse width, and fuel pressure:confused: . I will be purchasing something soon but dont know what. I have a stock 48re and pull my 10k 5th wheel as well as this is my daily driver. Just looking for a little more power while keeping egt's low as well as maybe a little better mpg

I can't compare the Smarty to the others you mentioned so I'll tell you about the Smarty ;-)

Pros... . it's the most tunable programmer on the market.

It has 3 to 5 software packages each with 9 levels of settings.

It probably has the best and smoothest power curve of all the boxes.

It has fuel economy settings and my favorite... . smoke on demand!

It's customer service is second to none ! and the softwares are constantly being improved on or upgraded.

It reads codes and clears them

It can adjust the ABS for correct tire size

Cons... . the only one I can think of is, it's not adjustable on the fly.

I don't think I've ever seen a bad comment about the Smarty. Just take a look at many of the sigs people have and you'll see how many love the box too ;-)

How often do you guys that have the smarty change the setting? I of course am interested in "smoke on demand"! Is the additional smoke noticeable at all power levels? or does it increase as the power levels go up? Thanks

I know my results could be abnormal, but mine ran 7. 77 in the eighth mile at 89. 97 mph in the 60hp program with my injectors and towing turbo. It went through the traps on my speed limiter at 99 mph because I didn't recalibrate for the tire change (28. 8 inch drag radials). The ET was still a 12. 33. This is with a completely factory stock CP3. Needless to say, I'm very happy with it. I don't know of any cummins trucks running faster on diesel only and the stock CP3. I plan on trying to go quicker this coming weekend.

Level 3 smokes quite a bit. So its not really an issue.

Thanks JThiessen. Do you have an auto or stick? I am curious to know just how much of a difference i will feel with the standard transmission. Of course, thats assuming i can shift fast enough. :-laf

Mine's an auto. Even on level 3 I felt a significant difference from stock. Maybe its just me, but level 3 seemed to have more low end grunt than 5 does. 5's power band seems to kick in at a little higher rpm and carry longer.

I am running #9, the 170hp with timing on my stock G56. I have an AFE Stage II, and muffler delete, that's it. It smokes! But it is controllable. My girlfriend drives it with #9 also and likes the power on demand for sure!

So far the stock clutch is holding (cross my fingers). I have a Quadzilla Commander to monitor the crucials.

Yes, better mileage and lower EGTs are a big plus! And Bob Wagner is a great guy to deal with, and I am sure Marco is too, but haven't spoken with him.

In addition to the above, it's theoretically undetectable following re-install of stock programming. No footprint for DC to find and void your warranty on the radio or heater motor because you chipped the engine.

I see that the horsepower increases range from 30 hp to 170 hp. What kind of increase in ft-lb is the smarty capable of? Also why are there "with added timing" with some of the settings. For instance 60 hp setting , one has added timing the other without. What is accomplished with adding timing ( or not adding) at the same horsepower settings?

Buy the SMARTY!!!! I sold my edge juice with attitude after trying a SMARTY. There is no comparison. Night and Day. ya I purchased one and I love it. Great smoke on demand and lots of power. My EGT's and Boost was not controlled as well as they are with the smarty. And the power wow it gives very noticeable power on low settings like 3.

Smarty&undetectability accounts.

I am sold on my Smarty but wondering if anybody has restored their truck to stock and turned it in for a warranty claim. I'm not talking about a clutch, driveline or auto. failure issue due to higher hp level, which can be expected, but an unrelated issue. ECM,ABS,PCM,driveability. Anybody truly escaped detection?

Con: My wife:-{} , following me to work today. Had me turn it down from #9 to #5, as she could not SEE through the Black Cloud I left her in!:-laf Oo. :-laf

Yes, I have. Drove to the dealer on #3, stopped in the parking lot outside the dealer and returned to stock.

With my TST still installed, I asked the service tech to look at the computer. He said what for and I told him I wanted to see if there was anything there that DC might think shouldn't have been.

The only thing he saw was a ABS code and he said it was because I had bigger tires.

The TST leaves a code which is one of the things TST is working on fixing on the 07's. It's a fueling code, I forget which one. The Smarty not only erased that code but, the tech didn't see a trace of Smarty.

That was your basic service call to the dealer. Now, as you said... if something catastrophic were to happen to the motor because of a programmer... . you can bet DC will figured it out.
