Advice For Increased Fuel Economy

Long time subscriber. Few posts. Marginal mechanical ability.

1998 &1/2 3500 4X4. No chip. Diesel Dynamics stage 3 injectors. BD Boost module.

4" exhaust. Sun Coast Torque Converter and Valve Body. BD Exhaust brake. FASS transfer pump. (My dowel pin was 1/2 way out).

The truck tows great, but maximum non-towing fuel mileage is only, at most, 15.

I did the performance upgrades several years ago under the direction of my late friend, Nowell Thomas. He was a TDR member and serious diesel drag racer.

Is there a chip out there that would substantially increase my non-towing fuel mileage and still be compatible with my enhancements?

Any real world, chip or otherwise, suggestions will be appreciated.

Any plug in chip that adds timing will help slightly with mileage.



But, I would check you MAP and IAT first. I use a rig with regulated voltage to tst the MAP sensors and they are one of the leading causes of low power and low mileage.



Don't forget all the common sense stuff as well. Make sure the trans is locking up. Check tire pressures. Check all the charge air boots for rips, tears adn loose clamps. Make sure you ahve a clean filter and no exhaust restrictions.



How many miles on the VP? I may be getting due.



And the list goes on. Heck, even a valve adjustment will sometimes get you a gain in mileage.

With larger injectors I have found my sweet spot (so far) with the timing of a Smarty. I have done some mileage checks with and without my EZ, but Smarty level 1 (timing only with boost fooling, no EZ) has netted me the best to date. These are highway miles empty, I am commuting 65miles roundtrip daily from Sacto to Auburn. If you get through Sacramento I'd be happy to loan you my Smarty for a week or two for trial use.
