I was tired of the noise from my 4" straight pipe. I decided to add a aerotubine muffler. The muffler uses a venturin affect to help accelerate exhaust gases. This is old technology for airplane engines and works well. Anyway, they are expensive, but it did lower my egts 50 degrsrees above 2000 rpm and 10psi of boost and it has a very nice quiet dump truck sound. I do not have any dyno information on the change in performance. Seat of the pants felt the same before and after. Their website is at www.aero-turbine.com I am not a paid representetive or have any financial interest in the company. Just wanted to pass along another thing that really works if you want quite with while improving egts.

the actual physics of the aeroturbine have been debated in other threads...

just interested, what was the total cost with shipping? My Magnaflow drones quite a bit at 2100rpm under load, doesnt really bother me, but if I could cut it by 50-70% it might be worth it. .

tnx

I'll be honest with you, that straight pipe crap is for the birds or Ford guy's. Also many of the aftermarket exhaust systems are just plain too loud, even with their large system mufflers.

I installed the HOG Performance 4" stainless steel full system exhaust. it is a work of art, polished and beautifully (yes I care). But even though I went with their quiet muffler, it had a drone that was way beyond aggravating or annoying, at 2000-2100 rpm. And when towing, It only got about three times worse, honest know one wanted to ride in the Dodge anymore, including myself. I ordered the Aero Turbine Muffler to add to my exhaust system, with the hope that it would calm down the drone. I cut it in 18" in front of the system muffler, it was very easy I just ordered the 4" in and out version and added a few band clamps. It did do what I wanted it to do, the majority of the drone is now gone, we also towed a very heavy trailer a little over 1000 miles and it still was OK. For me the Aero Turbine did what I wanted it to do, it reduced the drone to a very tolerable level. After the install I got so inspired by the reduced noise, I decided to try and reduce the noise even more. i insulated the exhaust manifold, turbo, down pipe, and made heat/sound Shields for the mufflers. On the inside I insulated the cabin floor,doors,rear area and anything else that needed it. The results were much better enjoyment of my truck while driving, it was so nice and quiet, I also went ahead and installed a completely new stereo system, why-not, I can now hear it.

TPod,

The muffler I installed also included the internal baffle, so it is the more expensive one, around $245. I installed it with the band clamps they are about $30. As to debating the actual physics of operation, bernouli's principle applies anytime you accelerate a gas. The actual amount of acceleration performed by the aeroturbine may be debatable, since it is turbulent air flow insiside the pipe, not laminar flow. At any rate it really reduced the drone, did not seem to affect performance, and did lower the egt's at higher rpms, hinting that somthing is happening. So, I am pleased with the results.

Why not buy a 4" in 4" out resonator? This is what they are made for I bought a 4" for my 4" system as it had a drone while towing it drove even me out of the cab, and when I went to 5" the drone was almost as bad as with the 4" so I added a resonator and both resonators were about $50. 00 from Source Automotive and completely cured the drone. After adding twin turbo's I was able to remove the resonator. Now I need to install the 5" PacBrake I have on the shelf.

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to say that for anybody who is considering an Aeroturbine on their 12v-------well it sounded GREAT on my '04 I had! That was basically a Banks system with no muffler and the A/T cut in right behind the downpipe. As close to the downpipe as possible is what they said was best. It worked----no in cab drone and real nice out back! Now I want one for the 'Lizard. :{

Maybe I'm too young still. My truck is 4" to 5" to 6" miter cut stacks straight through. I love it.

The only reason I'll be putting a muffler on it is because my Dad is buying it from me. Is the A/T really worth it?

My 12v will be straight piped though, I think the twins should quiet it down though.

Class 8 OTR tractors with more than twice the displacement of the 5. 9 can use a 6" exhaust. 4" will cover a 5. 9 WAY up there in power. If you run a straight pipe and cut the AT in just behind the downpipe, it will sound excellent. Like a straight pipe but without the bite and drone. It sounded great on my '04. Can't wait to do this '98 the same way.
