Finally playing with the AFC housing.

I got the truck in 2001 and was told the pump was played with. - whatever that means.

Supposedly the fuel plate was moved forward (how much I don't know yet).

The AFC housing also was moved forward. Now that I'm playing with it it appears to be all the way forward. I loosened the 4 screws/bolts - the max I can get it to travel is about 3/16" front to back - is this about right?

The star wheel was all the way forward - as in pinned there and VERY hard to move. Once I got it to move I made it just touch the spring - will this be the same as not touching the spring or will this help control smoke a little?

I just want to move it around and see exactly what it does and how it affects performance/mileage.

ALSO - how can I tell what fuel plate is in there? When I get around to taking the AFC housing off - is there a way to tell what it is? - whether it is stock, or aftermarket - and if aftermarket - what it is???

Thanks in advance!

Dan

I think I read somewhere that Piers said the plates on these trucks run best when they're slid 2/3 to 3/4 forward. I also think I read somewhere that somebody - Joe D. maybe - said if you gotta slide your plate forward you've got the wrong plate. And then somebody else said, "What plate?" :-{} :-laf

If the total travel is about 3/16", then yes, I have ti 2/3 - 3/4 slid forward. When I loosened the bolts, I couldn't slide it any farther forward. I read in a post where Joe D (I think) said for the 215 motor to do this.

I'm at 17mpg right now, I changed timing from ~12. 5 to ~14. 75 and noticed a substantial improvement on top end power, but nothing in the mileage dept.

If sliding the AFC housing back a little would help w/ mileage but not hurt performance, then I'll do that. I played with tightening the spring and not moving the plate - well - forget that - was ok not towing, but pull the trailer and tractor - oh my - what a dog!

Thanks!

Dan

I havnt noticed any change in mileage (when my foot isnt in it) from stock to 370s, to #11 plate, to plate full forward, to plate back about an 1/8". It gets 17. 8 around town and 21-22 at 70mph at all above mentioned conditions.
