I've adjusted the preload screw on the back of the AFC housing several times and finally have it running good(about 5 turns in from when it first makes contact); reasonable power from a dead stop and tons of power when the boost gets to about 10-12psi. I'm not sure i like all the smoke i'm getting as it's almost impossible to start off without leaving a black cloud behind me. If i turn the star wheel back a bit (it's full forward now) will i loose low end power? Will it get rid of some of the smoke? Any suggestions to Clear The Air a bit?

Thanks!

Brian :)

Brian,

I have the #11 plate in my 5 speed, the star wheel all the way against the front of the housing and the housing itself slid all the way forward. Mine burps a small amount of black off the line but then turns gray.

I installed the medium spring from the kit that I got from Joe D. I also adjusted the screw where it just touches the diaphram in the AFC housing.

I installed all this from the instructions that Joe sent me and so far I have not touched any of it...

With these adjustments. . off the line my truck is a stump puller.

Also are you running the stock air box?????

Rick

Yep, Stock air box. I was just looking at the BHAF on the web a little bit ago. The spring i got from TST is the one he suggests for the 180 hp engine( i also have one for the 215hp engine). When it's adjusted according to his instructions i had NO power from the start. I kept turning it in 1 turn at a time till i got low end power(5 turns) but with each turn, smoke increased also. Housing and star wheel are full forward.

Brian,

There is a point where the no load fuel setscrew gives you no more power, but makes more smoke off idle and at low rpms. I think this is where you are now. Bring the setscrew out 2 turns or so. You will find the off idle torque is still there, but burns clean. I did the same thing once.

In other words: Back the setscrew out till the exhaust is clean. You shouldn't lose low end power. You are in a little too far.

My truck is the same way. I run the setscrew not touching the diaphram. I get real good off the line torque & clean exhaust.
