Awhile ago I read where somewhere took all the guts out of the AFC. I was wondering what the benefit of this is?? Also I have asked about my smoke issue... When I lug it down under 1500rpms and stomp on it I get smoke to anout 1500rpms. . Is this what should be normal?? I have a TST#11 plate and AfE air filter, starwheel turned all the way towards engine(front). I was told it has 330 injectors, but I am not quite sure of that one yet... . Thank you, marc

The star wheel cranked all the way forward is giving you the smoke. It regulates the amount of fuel before boost comes on. Spin it back some to control the smoke

I am not complaining about the smoke... I honestly thought it would smoke more from the way everyone talks. . I guess I am used to my tractors that could smokemout an army when I work 'em. . Thanks, marc

Lugging isn't a good thing, for starters. The likely reason that the smoke goes away after about 1500RPMs, is that the boost and RPMs (improved airflow) came up enough to get rid of it.

I don't think you want to simply gut the AFC. There is a spring in there that keeps the AFC "finger" in the way of the governor lever until boost builds up enough to move it out of the way and let the fueling be controlled by the plate. If you remove the guts, there is nothing to move the finger out of the way. Now if you remove the finger, spring, diaphram, etc, then you'll have a ton of fuel (relatively speaking) at low revs with no boost until the revs come up. Major smoke! :eek: But with no real benefit to performance.

firemanmarc,

Check your EGT's as you see the extra smoke. :{

If the EGT's drop before they go up--you are drowning the fire with way to much fuel till the turbo catches up. :-{}

Its nice if someone has really made you mad but it will not perform better.

My $. 02

Where is your fuel plate set at???

WAYNES WORLD :p

My plate is all the way forward. My Egt's don't drop first. And I am embarassed about my smoke, my fellow diesel blowhards with there powerchokes make way more smoke than me. . I have to have something wrong and am certainj to get to the bottom of it within the next few weeks. . Thank you, marc

Marc,

While you have the auto still in there, try this drive test to help pinpoint your area. :-{}

Hold a watch in your hand, stop, hit the fuel, measure at WOT the time to 10 lbs. boost & note time & speed, REPEAT till consistant.

Then same except 0-60 at WOT, time & boost #'s

I reduced my times by having a baseline for testing other adjustments. Its not a dyno but a ballpark till you get one. :D

What are you doing in a couple of weeks for correcting the issues ? :(

Last, smoke doesn't always mean power. Jay is correct.

Other things to consider--timing, air in & exhaust out, afc housing location, 3,000 gov & afc spring kits. Grind your own plate. :eek:

First off, the truck listed is wrong, I have tried to change it and with no luck. . My new (to me) truck is '97 3500 4x4 5 speed. Truck does have #11 tst plate, and supposed 370 injectors (yet to check for sure). Afe stock filter with holes all over bottom of plastic housing, 4" stainless turbo back exhaust. Engine has no problem making 35+lbs. boost, heat does some seem to be less than before. Plate and Afc housing are all the way forward. I would love to grind my own plate, presently looking for a stock one or other to grind and keep my #11 alone. . I plan on cleaning fuel screen by pump, check overflow valve, and check for sure which injectors I got. . I have a 6BT that I put into an Oliver tractor, I have the pto hp to 345hp... and boy she will let you know when she is runnin'. I know they are different application but seems there must be something a miss in truck engine. . Thanks all for the help, Marc

firemanmarc,

I usually give an e-mail to Robin Patton to advise me or help change any problem with this web site. She always has the fix ready to our computer issues here. Give her a shout. :D

Have you checked your timing & maybe bump it up ? ;)

Let us know,
