I have made most possibe adjustments to my pump, but I have not messed with the AFC star wheel. I was wondering which way it needs to be tunred and the results of doing this?? Any information would be appreciated.
thanks

I have messed with my starwheel (in the whole way, out the whole and in between) but I didn't notice any difference any way I set it? Any ideas?

Where's the star wheel located on the first gen. pump? If I buy that 92 I'll have to crank on it, #ad
just can't help myself. I got rid of my awful turbo lag on my 95 when I cranked around on the starwheel on it.

The below diagram was taken from http://www.tstproducts.com but i altered it a little

If your star wheel (under the AFC spring) is set too high, the delivery rate pin won't move downward as it should with increasing boost levels. Turning the star wheel up (counterclockwise) increases the spring pressure, and slows the delivery rate. I'd suggest turning the star wheel down (clockwise) in 1/4 turn increments until you smoke, then back off (counterclockwise) till smoke is gone to your satisfaction, or smoke on under power, a black haze, not a black soot cloud. The retaining lock spring doesn't have to be removed, the star wheel will rotate with a small screwdriver gently placed and pried between the wheel and it. Note the location of the wheel, mark it, and count any turns for reference. Remember: Star wheel down=less spring resistance=increased fuel delivery rate.

Hey, how much on average have you guys turned your starwheel? I turned mine clockwise 1 turn and couldn't tell a difference.

I've slowly done the test and tune thing and have finally bottomed it out. It did change the response of the unit to boost up. Now with a 12cm turbo thats not an issue, but with the old iron it made a difference. The boost starts around 1600 and pops up to 22# or so at 2000 RPM, then 1# for every 100RPM up to 24#. Before it was a little later, like around 1750 or so before you would get the kick.

I'm kinda comfused now..... does the starwheel even make that much of a difference with a 12cm housing? I love my results with the 12, but i was just wondering if that starwheel is gonna improve it even more.

I think I'd better focus on transmission now. I'm above 33PSI #ad
I had to order a 50psi gauge since I run out of numbers! You shoulda seen the look I got from the guy at the shop I ordered it from... "You're getting over 33psi in that ol' Ram #ad
"

I don't think that you guys with the wastegated turbos are gonna feel the difference as much as I would. There will be a small change in the boost rate for you but that turbo makes tons of boost early and bottoms out the delivery pin. The spring rate would be the only thing to change. The star wheel reduces the spring pressure, but you guys probably won't feel it. This adjustment IMHO is for us non-wastegated guys to notice. Stock, mine was only 1 1/2 turns from bottom.
To control smoke the wastegated guys may want MORE spring pressure to get the boost up before the fuel gets dumped. #ad

I have the 12cm, but I don't have my wastegate hooked up because i'm only getting around 30 lbs of boost. I'm not planning to hook up the wastegate on my housing unless I reach some extreme numbers which I doubt. I'll go ahead and make this adjustment and see what kind of results it produces. Listening to wirenut, I don't think there will be much of an improvement.

Hey Guys!!!
What the heck am I turning, I see a lock nut and a stud that looks like a torx bit, is this what I am supposed to be turning??? This thing I was turning is under a grey metal cap, i didn't see sny star wheel???Is the smoke screw and star wheel two different things??? I have a 93, with an automatic.

Yeah! Your turnin' the wrong screw too! That's what I was doing! You must remove that whole cap there with the 4 straight head screws. Under this cap, there is the "starwheel". It looks like a gear. It clicks when you turn it. It adjusts the tension on that colorful spring under there. Turn that clockwise and always make sure to mark the original position so you can put it back if needed!
