Exhaust Brake Problem

Well, it's not a RR exhaust but it'll have to do...

Hey does any one know for sure which way to turn the star wheel to get more fuel with less boost, I've read several conflicting instructions, It seems logical to me to turn it clockwise to get less pressure on the AFC diaphram?

Proto,

your instincts are right, to a point. Actually, all else being equal, adjusting the starwheel (the gear-looking thingie inside the AFC housing) affects the RATE of fuelling increase. You start at the same point, but increase faster with less spring tension, or the starwheel being farther down.

PS- ditto on the sticky- helps if you've had a VE apart, though:)

This is not totally correct.

With the starwheel turned fully down (CW) the control cove will start to move at about 2psi of boost and reach its full travel at about 7psi

With the starwheel turned up 6 turns (CCW) from the bottom the control cone with start to move at about 5psi and reach its full travel at about 12psi

By increasing the preload on the spring the start and stop points of the control cone travel are delayed.

I stand corrected. I was referring to adjusting the starwheel vs turning the smoke screw inward. But I guess if you have less preload on the spring, it would start to increase sooner as well as at a faster rate. Brother, look we started. Another one corrupted.

I found a topic doing a search on my low mileage (16± I pumped my tires up to 80psi and now get 17. 5) that spoke of cleaning the guide pin that rides on the cone. I took the AFC diaphram off to clean and lube it and found the cone was dirty too so cleaned and lubed it too. While I was in there I turned the starwheel 1/4 turn clockwise before I put it all back together. I just a few minutes ago test drove it and got a noticeable improvement in acceleration! A little more smoke under acceleration but not too bad. I might turn the smoke screw back a turn later to see if that helps smoke any. I have to deal with the smog nazi's so I'm not allowed to make much smoke :( . My main goal is to get 20+ mpg's but having the chance to drive a little more sprited at times instead of always driving like I'm 90+ and still get decent mileage is a definite plus. Anybody know how much specific turns of the starwheel are supposed to net? Thanks

Tom
