i have an afe filter in my stock air box. i was wondering how to clean it? do i have to have the special oil? where do i get it? i got the filter off of ebay. it didn't come with oil. can i just hose the filter off with water?
Well AFE has a cleaning/reoiling kit for sale. You can order one from AFE or the dealer you bought the filter from. K&N has a recharge kit that any auto parts dealer that sell K&N filters carries. Plain water won't clean the filter. The kits have a detergent degreaser cleaner that you spray on, let soak and hose off. Be sure to hose off real good as any left over cleaner will have bad effects on the oil you spray back on the filter. You let filter dry and then use the oil in the recharge kit-spray on and let soak in then reinstall filter.
Might add, after the cleaner has soaked in and cleaned the gauze, very gently rinse the cleaner out of the filter and then let air dry. A spray of water or air could seperate some of the gauze and allow dirt through.
