I stuck a Mega Cannon on tonight, sounds great, seems to spool a bit better, max boost improved 1-2psi over the Amsoil-in-airbox variety.

Before installing it, I looked at the filter up against a light and it seems to be very "porous" with holes that appear to be quite a bit larger than the diameter of a human hair.

Does anyone know how efficient they are and to what micron level? Also do they come pre-oiled? It seemed a bit dryish.

Thanks,

Vaughn

;) My suggestion is that if you can see holes in it (Clear Light), don't use it. Any hole is going to let in dirt. A filter should be a filter, not a sieve. You want to trap all the dirt, not just part of it. Engines are way to expensive to trust to a filter you can see pin holes in. Peice of mind and trust in you equipment's performance reliability are the bottom line in the end. Good luck on what every you decide. ;)

AFE, K&N and vendors will tell you that these are fine except in really dusty conditions. Yes they come pre-oiled or at least mine did and it dropped EGT's 150 degrees over the BHAF on my truck.

Yea, cause they flow 2x more air than the BHAF with twins :-laf

UMMMmm - 'scuse me, but extremely DUSTY conditions was EXACTLY what the K&N was DESIGNED for - off-road, and dirt track sorta stuff... ;) :D

Perhaps you can provide a pointer where they are NOW saying otherwise?

Right on K&N's website, in their "filter facts" section, *I* read:

"K&N air filters are designed to provide minimum restriction long after disposable air filters have begun choking an engine. In other words, due to its characteristics, the restriction of a K&N replacement filter increases at a slower rate when compared to a disposable filter, i. e. a K&N filter will last longer under the same conditions. That's why most off-road competitors choose K&N filters.

In a hypothetical 24-hour off-road race to further the point, a properly sized K&N filter will see the racer through to the end with cfm to spare. The equivalent disposable air filter, on the other hand, will need to be replaced with a fresh element to ensure the engine has an adequate supply of air to complete the course. A K&N will provide excellent filtration without sacrificing air flow for a longer period of time — that’s performance with value. "

Sure doesn't sound to ME like K&N doesn't recommend their filters for dusty conditions... :p ;) :D

Well I'll keep a close eye on it to see how it does. I will check the intake hose often.

The K&N RE0880 I had a couple years ago did a terrible job of filtering in this area. No matter how well it was sealed it let a lot of dust through. The Amsoil filter has done a top-rate job but I know it doesn't flow as well.

I thought when this discussion was going around before the AFE rated well in filtering efficiency, higher than K&N by quite a bit. But those posts were quite some time ago (mission impossible to dig up).

Vaughn,

I got the Pre-Filter to put on the AFE megacannon. I was not sure how great the AFE filtered either. The pre filter should help.

aFe

Vaughn,

I have aFe on my diesels and today cleaned the one on the wife's rig for the first time. No visible or detectable dirt on the inside of the air inlet hose and a ton of dirt came out of the filter. I went ahead and put a pre-filter bag from aFe on which is supposed to be . 005" mesh to help keep the filter clean. The bag is a little expensive for a bag, but worth it if it works.

Vaughn, are you running a mega cannon or afe in the stock box?

By your other thread, I took it you are still running the stock box

On the oiling part, what makes the AFE any better in terms of letting oil through than a K&N. Both are cotton gauze and both use some kind of oil coating. I think the amount of oil a person uses on them largely determines how much excess oil goes into the turbo fan. I was just wondering cause I dont seem to hear this problem with AFE filters... maybe they use a better (stickier) oil than K&N.

FWIW, I always thought the K&N looked like it was built better than the AFE when looking up close. Maybe its not.

Wrong...

AFE is not made by K&N, they are their own company.

We used to sell both but now focus on AFE, and all I can tell you is if you hold an AFE stock replacement Dodge/Cummins filter in your left hand and the K&N equivalent in the other hand, you will EASILY tell the difference in...

And I mean more than the color difference... ;)

Hope this helps...

My oil analyisis showed a 4 for silicone after 4500 miles on an AFE

which included a bit of off roading. this is with out the pre-filter

SmokinRam,

Bob, it's the Mega Cannon, took the box out.

Car_nut 57, that's good to hear. I meant to ask you for a prefilter the other day, I'll stop by for one and a cleaning kit next week.
