Sticking PacBrake

I just ordered and AFE air filter and was wondering how many people are using them on their trucks? I remember reading something in the owner's manual and here that these types of filters may not filter enough finer particles and that they breathe too much. Based on my filter minder and having to replace the paper filter at 6k miles the '03's may be too restrictive.

Anybody have any problems?

MORE AIR

NEW '03 IS PULLING MORE AIR THRU A SMALLER AREA THAN PREVIOUS MODELS. AFTER MARKET IS HAVING TROUBLE MATCHING UP. THE PARAMETERS ARE STAMPED ON THE OEM AIR FILTER WHICH IS MADE IN THE UK. TBOB

I ordered mine direct from AFE yesterday and was to ship today. They said I should have it in hand Tuesday. Most of the places around here that carry them are sold out and getting more next week. You should have yours soon.

I don't think the air cleaner is restrictive. I KNOW it is. The factory Mopar filter is only rated right at 500 cfm (stamped on filter in metric units), which is below what the engine uses at rated power. I sent an e-mail to DC on the issue with hard numbers.

This is what I got back.

Thank you for your email to DaimlerChrysler regarding your 2003 Dodge Ram. It is always a concern when a customer is as dissatisfied with our products, as you seem to be.

Over the past few years, DaimlerChrysler has made tremendous gains in improving levels of customer satisfaction. But in your case, we apparently missed the mark.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for the problems you have had. I hope we will have another chance, sometime soon, to restore your faith in DaimlerChrysler.

Thank you again for writing

Prairie Dog,

I was a little surprised at the form letter as well. I am pursuing the issue further. We'll see what comes of it.

afe filters....

I ordered mine last week, and my guy called me today and said he had it. i'm picking it up tomorrow morning and i will let all know what my seat of the pants impression is. I have a feeling i'm gonna want the whole intake kit though..... bombing is addictive.....

CBalvert is right - the batmobile is powered by cummins.

I hear what you're saying Dave, and I'm going to see what the full intake system looks like. If it does a decent job of getting outside air, then I'll consider it.

Meanwhile, I kind of like the stealth approach of more air without obvious mods.

got it in....

seat of the pants impressions are as follows:

there is a definite improvement in engine breathing. it feels overall slightly looser, and i did notice certain improvements in both top end and low end driveability. Certainly would recommend it. For now this will have to do until the intake kit becomes available.

waiting for a box.....

cummins rules!

as you were.

MR PLOW, DO YOU HAVE A BOOST GAGE? AND IF SO, DID ANY THING CHANGE? TBOB

SORRY....

no gauges as of yet, am looking into a bd x-monitor. i would say though that it definitely is looser, which maybe translates into more boost?

it was worth it though.

My AFE is here but is being held captive by UPS :mad: :mad: :mad: . It's strange that Fed-Ex and the Postal service has never had any problem leaving packages at my front door! Now I'll have to take time off work on Monday to go pick it up at the hub. :{

If I can help it, I'll never use UPS again.

So I wasn't imagining things. :D During testing of our prototype Ram Air 3 on my 03, I noticed that freeing up the air definitely improved bottom end response, which I expected. But seat of the pants (and a stopwatch timing from 60 MPH - 90 MPH) confirmed a top-end increase as well, which we weren't expecting.

I get the feeling that the IAT/Pressure sensor on the airbox is having an effect on fueling of the truck, as we actually saw a slight increase in EGTs at WOT. 60 mph cruise EGTs were down about 75F though, and in town EGTs were down 125F, so the system was definitely getting the air in there. According to the FSM, that sensor is only for atmospheric pressure readings, but increasing the airflow must fool it into believing its running at a lower altitude...

Or at least, thats the theory right now. ;)

Don't get to upset with UPS, the shipper probably checked the box labled "SIGNATURE REQUIRED"

I had to go looking for the UPS man Wed. afternoon for the same reason.

I just installed my aFe filter but haven't driven it yet. Was anyone else's difficult to close the box cover? Mine was fairly difficult to seat the hinge portion of the lid. The filter had a slight bow in it but I figure the box lid pretty much flattened that.

I did it in the parking lot at UPS! I was wondering who was gonna win, me or the filter. Finally got the best of it though, and I've got the bloody knuckle to prove it :{ . It's really a tight fit but it does seem to have a marked increase in throttle response and the filter minder never moves
