Would like to see one in real life, the thing that concerns me is whether or not the front side of that thing is open toward the front or not. Be afraid of water, snow, and small critters being sucked into the thing at speed. Stock airbox gets stuff all over it as it is already!!

I wouldn't be concerned. Many of the gasser aftermarket air intakes, like K&N, point to the front. I had one on my very bombed 97 Dakota, and no problems, even after cutting out some of the rubber flap close to the radiator to provide more direct cool air flow.

Hold off for now Vaughn,

There is something in the works for a complete replacement all the way to the turbo. It will be an enclosed box, outside air only.

Maybe a week from now. I will post asap. Greg

Is that the Scotty intake or something else? The scotty looks good to me, being all enclosed and drawing from the front.

It almost looks like it blocks the cold air intake some. The bully dog seems like it's housing is very similar, the filter is just a little shorter. By the way , remember the claim of a 45 H. P. ?

I hope to post the dyno results soon.

It is in the R&D process right now. Not the Scotty III. It will replace everything from the Turbo up. Same amount of money as the AFE and Bullydog. It will be a closed box. Scotty is a closed tube. Kind of like a Voltair replacement box for The older trucks.

Thanks for the tip Greg :)

Looking forward to seeing pictures and information about it. I was leaning toward something using the AFE filter because I already have the filter element running on my 2001 and hoped to reuse it, but, I got it for a deal and if something better comes along it's not a big deal to let the AFE go.

Greg, I'm interested too. Haven't really liked what is available now for the '03's.

Waiting with baited breath:D

What Fred was looking for is a system that pulls no underhood air through the intake. I agree with him that the Scotty III has too long of a filter and they are known for collapsing. Plus there is not enough air,IMHO, swirling around in the Scotty. The AFE was my first choice and I am getting a little jumpy. I think I might try one of those. He told me to wait, The boxes are done and they are waiting for a new lid. I'll call him tonight and I will also send him this thread. Thanks, Greg

The Scotty systems are NOT known for collapsing. There were a few collapses with the old Psychotty Air and the K&N filter, many of which were caused by the back side of the filter housing being taped off to completely eliminate underhood air. In other words, the housings were modified beyond what the designer intended.

Since the switch to the aFe filter, and ESPECIALLY since the switch to the Scotty II design with dual inlets, there has NOT BEEN a single collapse of an air system that any customer has made us aware of. Since we're the primary distriutor, we'd have found out about it through the issuance of a warranty replacement.

To take this one step further, since the switch to a new mold with overlapping seams early last year, there has not been one single warranty replacement sent out.

Another important fact to keep in mind when selecting an air box is that you do not want air simply swirling around inside a housing. Airflow needs to be guided and directed around and through the filter. A square housing is simply not capable of doing this, and as such, must be made larger to ensure that it does not starve the system of air. The current housing size on the Scotty did not happen by accident. Several housing diameters were molded and used during its testing and change by even 1/2 an inch in either direction has a tendency of reducing airflow and raising EGTs.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to turn the aFe thread into an advertisement for another product, however there was some disinformation that needed to be addressed before people new to the sport were misled.

thanks for clearing that up Rod,

I have seen a couple of Scotty 1's and the filter was crunched. I have never owned one so I was guessing on that. Sorry dude, I didn't mean to flame your product.

I just got off the phone with the plant, and we're still on target for taking delivery of the first run by the middle of next week. We'll need to take care of some administrative things, such as install instructions, so the product should start shipping out April 7.

And I apologize for the strong response, Greg. It wasn't really intended to be as harsh as it came across.

But our exchange does serve to highlight a valuable point:

Internet forums are an extraordinarily valuable source of information. Indeed, without the information and support gleaned from the enthusiasts on forums such as the TDR, the diesel performance industry likely wouldn't be as far ahead as it is. I can definitely say that Wildcat wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as it is today.

However, there is a caveat to internet forums, and that is the abundance of not necessarily inaccurate or incorrect information, but outdated information. The diesel industry is currently very dynamic, and what was true yesterday may not be true today, and quite likely won't be true tomorrow. For example, since Wildcat officially went live 1 1/2 yrs ago, the Edge Comp has seen 5 revisions to its software and the TST product has underwent at least 2 revisions. Each of these revisions changed throttle response, reliability and in some cases, overall power. Our own air system has went through 2 revisions as well. Its impossible for an enthusiast or a hobbiest to stay abreast of the changes, or even to simply be able to afford upgrading all the time.

So for all you guys that are new to the diesel world, use these forums. They are absolutely invaluable. But they are still no replacement for a good, honest dealer who ensures that his information is kept up to date at all times.

Soapbox off :)
