Royal purple in the 6spd?

Has anyone run the AFE Magnum Force air intake system in snow and ice conditions? I'm worried about snow and Ice build up on the filter element. I understand they have a pre-filter that is suppose to eliminate any problems but I was wondering what has been the Experience of my fellow TDR members.

My truck is all stock but I Like the Idea of a completely sealed Filter "Meaning that all the air must go through the filter to enter the engine". Sure the factory air box is suppose to work that way as well, but I know of six Powder Strokes that had there engines replaced under warranty due to the fact that dirt and dust got past the factory filter. This was do to the box flexing and changing shape under extreme temperature conditions. I haven't heard of it happening to any dodges but I would rather not chance it.

So your Experiences with the AFE Magnum Force air intake system in Alaskan type conditions would be greatly appreciated.

Why would the stock box be anyless suspectible to rain and snow intrusion than an AFE Magnum?

Both run filtered air through the stock turbo inlet tubing.

Question? Did you have previous problems with the stock air box?

I would add an Outerwears Sleeve over the cone AFE filter if you are concerned but I'm having trouble seeing where one would have a bigger issue over the other... ...

In the stock box the plastic box protects the filter element plus the air is drawn from between the fender and the inner fender. The AFE magnum filter on the other hand sits exposed on top of the inner fender.

I'm wondering if people operating trucks with the AFE Magnum system on it have had any problems with the filter icing up in snow and freezing rain conditions.

I realize both filter systems run filtered air through the stock turbo inlet tubing. My point was the AFE filter would be less likely to allow dirt to bypass the filter as it is attached to the Inlet hose not sitting in the middle of a two piece plastic box. I personally haven't had a problem that I'm aware of with the stock air box but as I mentioned in my first post the company I work for has had ~6 powder stroke diesels replaced do to dirt bypassing the filter in the stock air box. Ford replaced the engines and installed a newly designed air box to hopefully prevent it from happening again.

So any icing problems anyone?

HOW ABOUT ANY EXPOSED FILTERS??? Anyone??

Ok maybe not many of you are running the AFE magnum filter in Snow and Ice condition. So let me direct this question to any exposed open air, can or cone type filters like the K&N or BHAF's.

Do you have any problems with snow and Ice collecting on the filter and restricting flow during the winter?

Do you run a pre-filter?

Any help please as I would like to add a AFE Magnum style system to my truck but want to make sure I won't have any problems with it up here in Alaska.

So all you northern members with these types of air filter systems please chime in.

I have run a K&N RE0880 with the red foam prefilter through one winter with no problems and have now run a BHAF through two winters with out any problems. The BHAF has a Outterwears cover on it for splashes of water from puddles.

I also know of three or four members of our Alaska club that run AFE's, BHAF's or similar setups and have no problems. Just do it.

I have the aFe cone air filter, I run through rain that I have to slow down cause I can't see the road. I've never seen any water anywhere near the filter unit that I didn't get there trying to wash the engine. Biggest problem I have with it is my ATS header bolts keep backing out, this causes an exhaust leak under the hood. Not good to have exhaust under the hood, keeps plugging up the aFe filter much sooner than it should. Dumb me didn't notice soon enough, bout sucked the dam thing through the engine. That air pump is gonna get air one way or the other.

Cheers,

Steve J.
