Gale Banks Talks Back

BHAF Connection Reinforcer

I am considering changing from the BHAF to the Megacannon and was wondering if the Megacannon provides cooler air. From the pictures I have seen, it looks as though the Megacannon mount has some sort of wall with a sealing bead on top that might tend to avoid some of the hotter underhood air and preferentially draw cooler outside air from openings in the inner fender. I realize it does not completely seal off the underhood air, but probably decreases the amount of hot air inhaled.

In any case, it looks to be more solidly mounted than my BHAF which just lays there where the stock airbox used to live.

Thanks for any help you guys may offer.

Steve

Here is my sealed AFE. More to keep water and splashback out

The AFE Mega Cannon

is probably much louder than the BHAF be prepared for more (some call noise) I call music from the engine compartment I have yet to see any signs of water from driving in rain or splash from puddles in filter area but it could be possible. I like mine very much but it took a couple of days to get used to it. I can't say much as to exactly how much it helped for EGT's I had k&n in stock box before.

I went from a BHAF to an AFE about two months ago.

It is LOUDER but I don't find it that offensive. I did note that I really wasn't running that much cooler when I switched over. others have but I did not get a signifigant decrease in egt's. One reason (I think) is that I used a Jannetty Heat shield with my BHAF so I was getting cooler air to begin with.

Just my two cents. :)

I've had the megacannon for a year now, and would have to say that I doubt that the "shield" they provide for the housing does much good for decreasing the amount of hot air it brings in. What does help is punching a hole in the cowl to help bring in air. I have been on AFE to develop a better shield... ... ... . we'll see.

Sticks- I like your setup- do you have any before/after tests on temps?

I went from a BHAF to the Mega Cannon about a year ago. No change in EGT's. You can really hear the turbo whine. We get lots of rain here in S. Fla and it usually comes down in buckets-never had any water in filters on any of my 3 trucks and all have AFE systems. :D

As soon as I get some $$$ for a EGT gauge, I will be more than happy to do a AFE stock, and modified test. I am sure that it does bring in more cooler air, since I have it booted to the hood, and I left the snorkel in place. It still brings some ambient under hood air in through the slats in the hood, and a little from around the ECM, but mostly the snorkel.

BillGotthelf - My hood may be out of alignment, or sitting a little high, but 80 miles of wet and slushy roads during the winter did a good job of getting the condom covered in water droplets. That was enough for me to decide to do something about it.

I put on the megacannon a couple months ago. I can hear a slight turbo whistle all the time, but its not annoying. When accelerating, it sounds like the wife's vacuum in the next room. When cruising, you can't hear it other than the whistle.

When you get a different turbo... ... . you'll hear it.

Ask John what my truck sounded like with the RE0880 (K&N) and my HX40 Kwikspool

Kat-

A different turbo is in the future, but maybe not till this fall. The little woman let me buy a Harley, so, I gotta be good to her and get her Jeep restored and on the road asap!! Or, I'll be pretty unpopular around my house! But...

John has told me a lot about your truck and I want a ride in it!! Got to ride in an 80 mph bass boat this past week, now that is a RIDE!!! 80 mph on water is awesome! I know there are faster but that was good for me!!! My wife was very glad I went for several rides!! I came back to camp... ... ..... excited... ..... !!!;)

Hope to see you in Muncie!!!

Take a look at AFE's new filter, called the ProGuard7, part no. #72-90010.

It's brank-spankin' new, and it's terrific!

It addresses two issues brought up by previous customers, turbo whine and additional engine protection through extra filtration. I installed mine two weeks ago on the original AFE mount. My wife too, was bothered by the whine over in the passenger side, but this new filter doesn't have the inverted cone at the end, its capped, but otherwise the same physical size. That cured the whine. I wanted a little more protection from dust and dirt, so this cures my needs as well. But it still is a whopping big filter area, far more than my system needs, even with the EZ and 4" Magna-Flow system. ( It has 7 layers of media instead of 5 )

I'm personally not concerned with the "hot air" issue, because when you're driving down the road, there's a tremendous air flow through the engine compartment with the super-large radiator and normal ambient air coming from below. I'll bet if somebody mounted a pyrometer at the air filter location, you wouldn't find much over ambient + 20deg, but that's just my opinion. One of these days I'll bring one home from work and try it to see.

If you want coooool air get the Scotty II air, I dropped my EGT temp by 50-75* around town and over 100-150* towing, that is over a BHAF with the cowl hole and a heat shield the sealed to the hood.

Bruce

This system is totally sealed off from the engine uses the megacannon air filter for more flow and you can cut the cowl area any way you want. It's got a nice powder coat finish too!

sticks

It seems like when your hood is closed it would have a tight seal on the filter mount, sooooooooo where's the filter getting it's air from? it would seem that it may not have any lower egt's than a stock filter? shouldn't there be some source of fresh air getting to the filter? or may be it doesn't show in the photo.
