AFE Pro, Mega Cannon, or Ram Air?

I just joined the site, I have a 03 H. O. and have a question on which filter is actually better for dirt roads like dry dusty Georgia clay, also the finer clay (kaolin). I have to drive down these roads at least once a week and the Kaolin is a very fine clay and getting behind a tractor hauling this at 60+ there is a white cloud pouring out?

Would the Ram Air be the better choice since the element is a little more protected? I don't want to be cleaning this thing every 5 thousand miles. My stock filter made it to 10,000 and had to be put out of it's misery ... poor thing had suffered to much

I am no expert but I would recommend keeping a paper filter in the box. From what I have read the paper filters will trap smaller particulates than a gauze filter.



However, If you really want an oiled gauze filter then try an aFe pro7 in the stock airbox.

Add an outerwears prefilter to the AFE, I did (water repellant version) and I think I will be happy. The prefilter can be washed (in your washing machine) now and then, so you clean the main filter less.

The Pro Guard 7 is designed just for the conditions you are in, AFE has specs that it stops dirt as well as a paper element yet the flow rate is great. They are the only air filter/intake system we sell as we have always been a big proponent of clean air only.

did the outerwears cut down on your flow? outerwears claims a 1% restriction. what are your impressions? SOP?

the ram-air (scotty) would be great until the first time you got behind someone and had to eat their dust for any amount of time.

i think the ram-air is the best out of the bunch (as far as flow goes)... . uses a monster AFE filter. you could wait till they come out with the pro-guard 7 for the scotty systems (wilcatdiesel.com) - i'm sure rod at wildcat has an idea when that will happen. i think the proguard seven is a lot more RESTRICTIVE than what any vendor or the manufacture will fess up to. "they" claim it flows 10% less (more restrictive than the afe mega force), but i have graph from a flow study that it has more like a 20% restriction compared to the afe mega force. if they would just come out with the truth it wouldn't torque me off as much - just the facts

Couldn't tell a difference SOP. Even if it were 1%, I'd take it in a second just for the water repellant properties.

David, do you have a part # for the Outerwears with the AFE Filter?

I do, but it's at home. I can post it when I get home. Meanwhile, if you want to just call and order one, my AFE filter (non PG7) is a cone, 8" diameter base (where it connects to the air inlet pipe), 7" diameter on the narrow end, and 8" tall. You have to specifically ask for water resistant too.

Just got an email from Rod at Wildcat. He stated that the Pro Guard 7 would not be available for the Ram Air III. He did not provide a date when it would be available.

He also stated that they had data on using a slip on pre-filter (did not specify type) provided an additonal 1% filtering efficency, but increased flow restriction up to 50%. His terms were, "We deemed the test a failure and have stuck with standard filters"

The part number for the prefilter is WR25-22-8T for the water repellant version.



I respect what Rod has to say, but I just don't see how my prefilter is restricting it 50%. I can't tell a difference.
