Anatomy of a Frantz toilet paper bypass oil filter

Was at the 4wheelparts truck 'fest' in Denver over the weekend. This Is more of a I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER chat type rant... but here goes... .

Buddy I was with wanted to look at the new AFE filter that does not use oil. We stopped at the booth and discussed the product, looked in the catalog... and then I popped in with "do you have one that replaces the BHAF?"

The guys says. . what is a Big honkin air filter... I told him... he said... oh yeah... those are ***** or those are cr@p. They don't work... . blah blah blah. He then said ... I'm a cummins guy and those aren't worth *****.

I did not say anything... my buddy continued his conversation and then we left. I told my friend... that the Rep SAID he was a cummins guy... but did not know what a BHAF was... and he is in the filter biz???? Love it when the sales weasel totally downplays another's product (that he clearly knows NOTHING about) when dyno tests prove that the stock air box is fine to like 500 hp... but that same weasel will tell you that his product will turn dog ***** into gold. LOL OK... rant off.

After trying a K&N cone filter then an AFE I have a lot better peace of mind running a BHAF! Sure they may not rate as high CFM-wise as some of the performance filters but it's hard to beat paper for filtration performance and dirt-holding capacity.

It was just surprising that he did not know what it was... then told me that it was dog doo. Vaughn is correct. Theirs MAY pass more air... but do they actually 'filter' as good? I bet that this slimey sales weasel sold 'throttle body spacers' at one point in time too... maybe even those '12 volt fans' that install in the intake tube to 'give u more power' LOL

It's actually not that surprising to me that the rep didn't know what a BHAF is. Not even TDR members as a whole know what a BHAF is--only those who frequent these forums probably know what it is.

Keep in mind that "BHAF" is an acronym coined right here on this site, and isn't used outside of this site except for a couple of other Dodge/Cummins related forums. It's always nice when vendors spend time here and interact with us, but it's just not realistic to expect them all (or even most) to do so.

As for the rep's opinion, that's not surprising either. I bet every K&N rep also thinks all air filters besides K&N are garbage. :D

AFE has dyno'd and flow tested versions of the BHAF,I asure you there are engineers at AFE that know all about it. When you want to bag on a sales rep know who you are talking about(or to) or you become just like that rep spouting off :-laf

Pump the brakes ther big guy. You missed my post completly. What I am saying is the first words outta his mouth was that the bhaf was the sh word. Multiple times it was sh.

I could care less what the afe flows for 1 more hp or flows a bit more air... blah blah bblah.

Fact is he did not know what it was but said it was junk... to push his product. If they DID test one and it flowed horrible... then he coulda said... "ours flows 20 percent more" and is reuseable too.

Don't lump me in with the sales weasel.

LOL, funny that stuff like this still pops up. Back in 2000 (someone fact check me onthe year) after about an hour with a filter catalog at the local NAPA store I discovered the filter that I original called a Big Honking Air Filter, and within a day was given the shorter BHAF handle. Who knew that 10 years later it'd still be a topic of discussion. As a short PS, when I looked at the very first BHAF in my then fairly new truck I wanted to call it a Big ------- Air Filter, but discretion ruled.

Just found the original post, it was July 2001. https://www.turbodieselregister.com...16-big-honking-air-filter-installed-long.html

Lotta water under the bridge since then.

not to beat a dead horse but i understood ur comment and u labled me with the sales dude. . would you expect currie to bash a dynatrac axle right off the bat? Especially when you are at an event that is put on by four wheel parts? That guy was repping product... and did a poor job at it... I had no attitude when asking my question but got an earful in return.

I went back and read ur comment for a third time... and in no way did I dog his product... I asked if there was a replacement for the bhaf. Then he started going off... . I did not quote flow numbers, price, dirt holding ability, hp or anything else. That was it... I asked a question and got an ***** of an answer.

Moparguy--I was thinking that exact thing! I think I had just joined the TDR at that time. In fact, I also remember it being referred to as the moparguy filter. I recall lots of discussion about the different types because some have the internal reinforcing metal and some don't.

I've been using the BHAF ever since I read that first thread.

Wow that's a flash down memory lane. . . I remember that thread (especially Puff's post at the top of Page 3, great laugh). I was just wondering the other day who started the BHAF saga, you had no idea what you started way back then Oo.

I think "BHAF" has gone a little further than just a couple diesel boards. . . try typing 'BHAF' into these acronym finders

Abbreviations.com
Abbreviations and acronyms dictionary: Find definitions for over 4,219,000 abbreviations, acronyms, and initialisms

and some boards. . .
frybrid.com
pavementsucks.com
powerstroke.org

. . . and on and on. I counted at least 10 forums and several vendors when googling BHAF.

I remember when I took the BHAF filter out of the box, I laughed. I couldn't believe it would fit in that spot. It did, and every time I opened the hood, it was still overwhelming. I loved it. I agree if the guy doesn't know what a BHAF is, he isn't a knowledgable Cummins guy. Maybe he only knows about Cummings.
