Last night I installed my new intake system. Total time was about an hour and 15 minutes or so (I was somewhat familiar with it, since I put a PG-7 on my 03).

Here is my take on it:

Installation issues with AFE Stage II ProDry-S on 2006 Dodge Ram:

1. The instructions make no mention of having to remove or reroute the radiator overflow hose. This is a definite requirement, as the shroud cannot go in without removing it, and not rerouting it will lead to chaffing of the hose.

2. Instructions state to “using 13mm wrench, remove upper radiator support bolt”. Well, you actually need to use a 10mm socket to remove it.

3. Outer bolt/nut/washer provided by AFE for securing the shroud is impossible to install (this is the bolt closest to the fender). If they included a speed nut (the U shaped spring steel clips) for this spot, it would be wonderful. I seem to remember that the PG-7 system I put on my 03 had speed nuts for this spot…. or maybe I used my own. If you are buying a system, get your self a 3/8-16 speed nut for this.

4. There is no definitive limit to how far you can push the filter onto the intake tube. Once you get it on, it tends to slide too far back onto the area of the tube that is not circular. I fear gaps in this area.

5. I had to scrape and remove coating material from the fastener holes for the lid to get the screws to start.

6. There was no mention of removing the stock intake tube from the turbo (minor omission, but it might throw someone who doesn’t know much about these things).

For being one of the most expensive, and so called top of the line, intakes on the market, I expect more out of a product, especially in something so simple as an instruction sheet.

They do have a nice set of “AFE Diesel Power” stickers with it…. . for those that like stickers.

The lid is a nice touch, compared with the old PG-7.

There is definitely a difference in the size of the intake tube compared to what I had on the old PG-7 /torque tube assembly. I miss the nice aluminum inlet though. But with all things, they found a cheaper way to make them out of plastic.

It definitely whistles now. The exhaust brake is much more noticeable too. Hopefully I’ll not grow tired of it.

For those that have run this on their 06 auto’s – have you experienced turbo bark? I removed my old PG-7 from my 03 due to excessive turbo bark. Hoping its not an issue here.

1. I just moved my hose around the shroud, did not need to disconnect it.

2. Yeah, 10mm.

3. I just used a very lock extension with a swivel socket, worked fine.

4. True, I just slid the filter on, most of the way back, and tightened it, no gaps that I can see.

5. Me to.

6. Yeah, but kind of obvious.

And yes, it whistles something fierce.

JThiessen, Have you heard any turbo bark(s) as of yet ?? If memory serves me correctly, these turbo barks are evident under high levels of air flow (under heavy load) and an immediate letoff of the accelerator (??).

My AFE Stage II will be here in a few days and this was a (mild) concern for me too. Installing on an '05 CTD 2500.

Is there a pro-dry AFE filter, that will replace my original STAGE 1 AFE?

dumb question time:

IS this a dry filter as the name implies? Cause I called AFE when I got one for my dads truck (blue filter media) - and they said it is not a dry filter, but very little oil and very thin oil at that

So far, so good. Mind you I havent romped on it hard (transmission is slipping), but on the 03, I had bark even under normal driving conditions. So, yes, I believe they improved it.

Instructions? what do you need those for?

I thought it was self explanatory, remove old and bolt in new:-laf

Jacob, didn't you do yours in just under 4 hours?

As an update, installed my aFe Stage II w/ Pro Guard 7 Filter (oiled - no white collar) yesterday. Note, in the process of ramping up the "enhancements" on the rig, so things will improve more. To date, this aFe filter intake system is the first mod added other than gauges. Muffler Elimination is next followed by Smarty, lift, and 35's.

At first blush on a cruse through the neighborhood and side streets, the stock upgrade to the aFe Stage II seemed to improve the following characteristics:

1. EGTs were down about 100-150* on average.

2. EGT cooled a lot quicker prior to shutdown (note 95+* day yesterday and past few days here).

3. Turbo seemed to spool at about 200-300 RPMs lower that prior.

4. Torque seemed higher at a little lower RPM too.

5. Have to say, I am pleased - "perception gain as advertised" (hoping its a bit more than that).

Have yet to wind it up out in open spaces, but just wanted to share.

Also, a note on the install, that back bolt, under the cage, closest to the passenger fender is a real SOB to get on (especially at 5'9" - short). :-laf
