Last night I installed my new intake system. Total time was about an hour and 15 minutes or so (I was somewhat familiar with it, since I put a PG-7 on my 03).
Here is my take on it:
Installation issues with AFE Stage II ProDry-S on 2006 Dodge Ram:
1. The instructions make no mention of having to remove or reroute the radiator overflow hose. This is a definite requirement, as the shroud cannot go in without removing it, and not rerouting it will lead to chaffing of the hose.
2. Instructions state to “using 13mm wrench, remove upper radiator support bolt”. Well, you actually need to use a 10mm socket to remove it.
3. Outer bolt/nut/washer provided by AFE for securing the shroud is impossible to install (this is the bolt closest to the fender). If they included a speed nut (the U shaped spring steel clips) for this spot, it would be wonderful. I seem to remember that the PG-7 system I put on my 03 had speed nuts for this spot…. or maybe I used my own. If you are buying a system, get your self a 3/8-16 speed nut for this.
4. There is no definitive limit to how far you can push the filter onto the intake tube. Once you get it on, it tends to slide too far back onto the area of the tube that is not circular. I fear gaps in this area.
5. I had to scrape and remove coating material from the fastener holes for the lid to get the screws to start.
6. There was no mention of removing the stock intake tube from the turbo (minor omission, but it might throw someone who doesn’t know much about these things).
For being one of the most expensive, and so called top of the line, intakes on the market, I expect more out of a product, especially in something so simple as an instruction sheet.
They do have a nice set of “AFE Diesel Power” stickers with it…. . for those that like stickers.
The lid is a nice touch, compared with the old PG-7.
There is definitely a difference in the size of the intake tube compared to what I had on the old PG-7 /torque tube assembly. I miss the nice aluminum inlet though. But with all things, they found a cheaper way to make them out of plastic.
It definitely whistles now. The exhaust brake is much more noticeable too. Hopefully I’ll not grow tired of it.
For those that have run this on their 06 auto’s – have you experienced turbo bark? I removed my old PG-7 from my 03 due to excessive turbo bark. Hoping its not an issue here.
