I've been looking into the AFE Filter Systems tonight and I don't get it. Why does this filter cost so much? The stage 2 with the Pro Guard 7 filter is crazy. You can get just the filter for around $100 or the whole thing for over $450. That housing must be an engineering marvel or a sight to behold. And people thought the government was nuts for buying $200 toilet seats.

Because it's not junk. I have one, and it is steel, engineered to fit right in your truck, dramatically increase your air flow, and not allow in tiny dust particles that could be disasterous for your $8000 motor. BOMBing ain't cheap, but neither was your $50K truck... ... ...

You know the old saying, you play you pay! I got mine off ebay shipped to my house for $399 and I don't regret it one bit. It's all about airflow.

I agree Blu, some of these things are reasonably priced and some seem like they are just crazy for what you actually get. To justify the price by saying your truck cost 50 grand doesn't really make sense. Following that logic a taillight bulb should cost $75 dollars and a fanbelt $150. And I paid less than half of what a new truck costs, do I get it for less? I think that the answer is that there is a market for such products, and there are those that are willing to pay it despite the seemingly over priced nature of them. We vote with our cash in some cases.

Must have gone up in price from the 03s. I bought mine from Geno's with the prefilter sock for somewhat less the $300 if memory serves correctly.

I have one on my 04. 5. I ran for about 80k before cleaning it, the amount of dust and crap on it was insane! Yet, I was able to wipe the inside of the torque tube and there was nothing. I'm now a bigger believer!

afe stage I / Stage II

Well I was a little confused on the definition on Stage I / II also. This is what AFE site says.

Stage I: Stage One kits replace the factory air box with a housing and conical filter assembly, and may include a heat shield

Stage II: Stage Two kits replace the entire intake tract all the way back to the Turbo or intake manifold, providing the ultimate level of fresh, clean, cool air to boost your performance

I have an AFE Magnum Force w/Pro-Guard 7, Pre-Filter and Torque Tube for 04. 5 HO 600 Cummins. Paid around $400 for everything. This combination in July 2004 it was defined as Stage II. Now it appears the new AFE has the Torque Tube combined with the air intake.

I am happy with the AFE system and I do like the fact that I can choose to use the Torque Tube or not at my whims.

Yep thats what I put on my 04. I had a hell of a time getting it to fit on the turbo had to drill out the hole some to get it to line of where the intake tube bolts to the filter base. Sent AFE a email about there so called torgue tube new design but never heard from them. There custome service is not to good.

Larry Schultz.

That is the first I have read about an AFE product giving some trouble on installation.

I am about 2 days from ordering my own AFE system.

Should I be concerned ?

My 03 setup is like the front part of the 2004. 5. I don't have the tube to the turbo and would not have wanted one. I want the baffles etc. I like quiet. My exhaust makes enough bark without having to hear any more turbo whistle then I already have. Remove the silencer ring in the turbo,no way.

I have my AFE Stage 1 on the way. I wasn't going to spring for the torque tube, but got tired of trying to find a piece of pipe the right size and price that I could powdercoat, so I just paid the ridiculous price for the convenience. The stage 1 kit is just the box and filter, the TT being an addition 90 bucks or so, but now it's PLASTIC (I'm getting metal). The stage 2 kit is the box AND tube, but the tube is all funky shaped and goes from 5" at the filter to 4" at the turbo. The funny thing is, the Stage 1 with TT flows more air than the Stage 2, however the stage 2 does reduce some turbo whine (WHY??!). Personally, I would stick with a Stage 1 with PG7 and either make your own intake tube (prob $50 or so) or spring for the torque tube.

I just installed a stage 1 AFE on my 2nd gen this weekend. I ordered mine from J C Whitney for $260. I see they have the 3rd gen for $290. I have not had my cd player on for 3 days now. :D Just love the sound of the turbo!

Was that price with the PG7 filter? I wouldn't put the non-PG7 on my 3rd gen CTD, but that's just me...

Here's an easy way to hollow out the air tube silencer (about 2 bucks) and it flows as good as the $100 units. (note, hollowing out the air tube will result in turbulence and actually reduce the airflow more than with the baffles installed). By inserting a 4 inch pipe inside the below unit, the airflow is enhanced. Look up my thread "cheap and effective torque tube" posted last week.

Stage 2 includes a more formidable down pipe (similar function to the additional torque tube with the stage 1) that comes with the filter and housing. I bit the bullet and bought one 2 weeks ago. Love it!
