Concerned about tailgate theft.

Anybody seen any aftermaket tailgate locks for the 3 GEN trucks?

I had one on my 99 but haven't seen any for the new tailgates.

Thanks

Thanks for info on the tailgate lock. I looked around a bit with no luck.

Got to get one , atleast it'll slow'em down a bit.

Thanks Guys,

Robert

i bought this one.

it snaps in place with some very aggressive double sided tape.

its not the best in the world, but then again, since i have a rollup top, if someone really wants whats in the bed, they can cut the top.

good luck

Yep, thats the one i had , good unit.

Done deal ,ordered one . Read a post where car dealer ships have additional security due to tailgate thefts .

That said , not sure what tailgates cost but I know they're not cheap .

Evidently I must have had my eyes shut when i searched.

Thanks for the help.

Robert :)

When I installed my ReTrax's Bed Cover, I ordered a tailgate lock. It is similar to this:

http://www.truckgadgets.com/shop/?p...&category_id=3ebf5ad439122bf74b6fdf74f2de1311

The positives: Secures the cover, and the tailgate; Works off of my key fob (locking or unlocking the doors - locks or unlocks the bed and tailgate)

The negatives: These types of locks will only keep honest people honest. If someone wants into your locked bed, or wants to steal your tailgate, they will. . :( .

By the way... I'm really pleased with the ReTraxs cover.

I had a "Roll-N-Lock" on my 2001 and this one is much better... ;)

I installed a "Cap and Lock" tailgate lock which I purchased from the dealer. With my discount, that was the best price. In addition I installed a hose clamp on the right side round hinge.

Grizzly, great idea about the hose clamp. I just now went out and did the same thing. I took a hoseclamp amd wrapped it in electrical tape and cut it off so it doesn't have that loose end sticking out and put it on so the hex is straight up when open, and on top when closed so I don't see it when the tailgate is closed. Of course anyone with a screwdriver can remove the clamp, but it is cheap and easy insurance against the spontaneous stealers. Thanks for the idea.

Your welcome. I don't understand why Dodge doesn't install factory locks on our tailgates. Furd does.

I got mine from Summit Racing. Just do a search for tailgate locks.

Hey there Rams-n-Hogs, I was just wondering how the lock from summit installs and what kind of material it is made out of.

That's because Furd has received a lot of complaints about tailgates being stolen while the truck was sitting at the dealers for repairs... :D :D

I know from first hand experiance about the loss of a tailgate some ditry unmentionable rat stole mine in broad day light a good used one runs about $450 and my friend said he would paint it fore me fore $200 but at that rate iI turned it in to my insurance and paid the $500 dectuctable but I got something for the next rat that want's a shot at it I found a tailgate lock on line fore $20 that goes over the half round pice on the right side takes a t-45 or t-46 torks bit remove the screw put the lock on and put the screw back in . but went one step futher welded a washer on the cable bolt now you have to remove the bolt to take the tailgate off ( cable wont slide over the washer . that's one idea . not to manny people walk around with a torx bit in their pocket.

How much? What brand? Where can one purchased it?

Here are the details:

Cost is $90 and I ordered mine from pickupspecialties.com. (I also installed one on my ARE cap that operates using the same door lock signal. ARE carries it as an option although my ARE dealer wouldn't install it. The ARE cap lock was around $150. )

"The Power Lock Electric Tailgate Lock mounts quickly and permanently inside the tailgate of most pickup trucks, and ties easily into the existing power doorlock or remote-entry system for from-the-cab convenience.

Installation is simple enough to complete in about an hour. No drilling is required.

Permanently mounted inside your truck's tailgate, the PowerLock Electric Tailgate Lock connects to your truck's power door lock system using simple push-and-lock connectors... just lock your doors, and the tailgate automatically locks with them!

The PowerLock is made of hardened stainless steel, and is designed to be virtually tamperproof.

Don't have power door locks? With a Switch Kit, you can still have all the convenience of the Power Tailgate Lock. We even have Wiring Extension Kits, for Crew Cab long bed pickups . "

I'll second FJfonda's motion for the PowerLock, with a couple of areas to watch for.

For the quad-cab long-bed owners definitely get the Wiring Extension Kit. You might have to ask about it, as lots of retailers don't list it as an option. My retailer didn't mention it, so I had to custom fabricate a harness extension. No big deal, but it meant another trip to the hardware store.

Also, the "push-and-lock" connectors that came with my kit were EXTREMELY cheap, and came already locked shut. I broke one of them while trying to open it up, and they didn't provide any extras. I emailed the manufacturer expressing my displeasure, and their president emailed me back. He explained that they used to provide high quality connectors, but they now use cheap connectors due to pricing pressures from competitors. He offered to ship me some extra connectors, along with a spare part for the PowerLock that might be helpful being in a colder climate. I accepted his offer, but he never followed through despite another email reminder from me. #ad

So, I love the product now that it is installed, but their customer service and some of the parts leave something to be desired.
