Aftermarket air filter...

Haven't done any research in a couple of years... I need to get a replacement cone (AfE-style) air filter, and was curious what is out there that flows and filters well?

Last I heard was AfE's Pro-Guard 7 and AmSoils filter were the best.

The OEM filter flows more air than needed for a stock or mildly modified engine and does as good a job filtering air as any filter money can buy.

Aftermarket air filters are proven to do nothing for a Cummins engine until horsepower exceeds something like 450 hp.

I'll piggy-back on this. Over my last three or four oil samples, silicon has sat at 5 with a drop-in AFE PG7. I changed over to the Fleetguard paper to see what my oil samples come back with now. I'll report what I find in a later post. Suffice it to say, I am with Mr. Barlow on this. I just need some physical proof.

I'll report what I find in a later post. Suffice it to say, I am with Mr. Barlow on this. I just need some physical proof.

At 5ppm silica you will probably never see less than that, You can get more dirt in the oil by just checking the oil or even oil itself is never 100% clean. Look at the bottom of any bottle and you will see a bit of residue. If you crack the oil fill cover off you will get microns of dirt inside also. so to think you will get below 5 ppm is a stretch.

Thanks for the advice guys... I already have an air box, so stock isn't an option, running an UNI at the moment, just curious on other options for cone-type... I know Geno's used to only sell the AfE Pro-Guard's, but now they're selling AirRaid... didn't know if it was because they're "better" or what?

AFE pg7 for me. I keep a dry AFE for the day my oiled one is drying.

Nope... ... ... A low quality air filter will spike silica levels in the oil faster than you would expect.

I used an AirAid filter on my 03 with the following silicon levels on oil samples:



miles 6k - ppm 2

miles 8k - ppm 2

miles 12k - ppm 3

miles 12k - ppm 4



I felt comfortable with the results.

Thanks Bill. I've been concerned about the PG7 and that's why I switched to the paper again. What are you running these days???
