Hi fellas, does anyone know if the lift pump in our first gens. are an inherent weak link?
Does anyone make an aftermarket replacement thats of good quality?

I purchased an Airtex brand pump and the quality was terrible, especially in the threaded fitting area. I ended up returning the pump tp the auto parts store and visiting my Dodge dealer for a quality replacement part.

Go to your local Cummins distributor--it is a Cummins part and is used in many engine applications besides Dodge where the fuel tanks are located below the engine.

I got mine at Los Angeles Freightliner.
As a matter of fact I also got my front seal there too. A little cheaper than Cummins and the parts and service department is open 24 hours a day! If you have some big rig dealer nearby give them a call. The parts I got were genuine Cummins.

Unless you have an obvious leak, and have only a hard start condition. Check the overflow valve its on the left front (facing engine) of the fuel pump. The overflow valve is in the return line fitting. The spring has a tendency to become compressed. You can remove it and disassemble it and stretch the spring out to . 500-. 550. Be careful when you take this thing off the pump as you can lose parts down in there. I was told to cram a towel down in there to catch the parts. You don't want to lose the parts that go to this thing because it costs about $60. 00-$80. 00. After you take it off you will figure outhow to put the valve back in one piece.
