Stumbled across these in the Summit catalog. They are currently available for the '94-'98 4X4 Dodge Truck.

The model we would want is the SB-1 or SB-2

These look and sound like nice steering chucks. They are "quick ratio", which is probably 2 revolutions of the steering wheel to lock to lock. NICE!

Notice the disclaimer about not for a short wheelbase truck.

Could this steering chuck clean up the sloppy steering & wandering some of our Rams have? I'll betcha they would. #ad
Maybe ALOT.

About $320 for the AGR box. Not bad at all.

This is what I will do to mine. I have talked to AGR and they do have the box for my truck. I'm so tired of playing the stupid dealer games that I'm just going to buy the AGR box and install it myself.

Later,
Mike

Howdy Agg's!

Very Cool! The #2 with variable ratio would be great for the street. With VR you get best of both worlds - Highway is easy and tight stuff is to #ad
I wonder if our stock pumps can supply enough volume and pressure?

I love replacing factory junk with quality new pieces. I was looking at their hydraulic steering set-up, but that's not for street use.

This is the piece they put on a jeep on Trucks! on the same episode they installed the Milemarker hydraulic winch. They installed an AGR PS pump to help the winch and upgraded the steering gear at the same time. It looks like a pretty stout piece.

Isn't this just a rebuilt box with more attention paid to tolerances/matching?

Why would a properly assembled steering gear box cause wander? If I hold the steering wheel straight then there is no directional change input via the drag link - wouldn't this mean that wander is attributed to the front end alignment? If the gear box is sloppy then you would have over corrections that are causing the 'wander' - kinda chasing your tail.

mikel,

If my steering chuck had play, I'd try this one in a second. Let us know how it helps. If there is no change, return it. Steering chucks are a breeze to swap. I'll bet it helps. Maybe it will cure it. Definately post a good thread on how it works.

Brian,
I know what you mean. By reading some threads here, it seems SOME trucks, not all, the steering chuck is to blame for sloppy steering & wander. You are right, this chuck is not a 'cure all' for the drift & wandering problems some late model Rams have. Maybe it will help some trucks. Maybe not. mikel will be the test mule. #ad

Would the AGR box show an improvement in steering opposed to the OE chuck? I'm sure it would. #ad

You guy's just kill me!

I've posted about AGR at least six times in two years. If one you will just BUY the dang box and install it, you could give us a real report instead of the pointless speculation and WAG's on how it really works #ad

243,
It's all in the marketing. You should have posted a picture! #ad

'94 3500 4x4 w/non-wondering worn out stock steering gear. (It will be getting the $129 Auto Zone replacement with the lifetime warrantee! #ad
)

The auto zone model ($129) is going into mine this weekend. My box is definetly my biggest problem with steering.

96, purchased used, white, auto, standard size tires

Hope you "AUTOZONERS" like changing your steering boxes... Last box I bought from them was for my straight axle cherokee... I had 330,000 miles on the original. . so I installed one of their "Lifetime" warranty rebuilts ... FOUR boxes later I had one that was almost as good as the original with 330,000 miles. . (one box locked solid first time I turned it all the way to the right to purge the fluid lines. #ad

You get what you pay for at Autozone. Thats why I don't buy anything rebuilt from them...

My 1st rebuilt starter from Autozone was defective. Used to get a 'BANG' when the pinion gear engauged into the ring gear. Got worse as it got colder out. Used my lifetime warranty and got another one. Much better.

The AGR box is light years ahead of a discount auto part chain rebuild.

Tom and HemiI replaced my stock with an agr last june. Nine months and 4 boxes latter still not much of an improvement. Every box agr sent made the truck steer differently. The boxes still have a lot of play in them. Even after doing the required adjustments. I called agr last week and told them about the play I still had while steering the truck, and asked them if they had in fact installed there new pitman arm bearing or shaft ,his reply was yes. I told him that the pitman arm shaft still has a lot of side to side movovement,he further stated that these new parts will only help reduce not eliminate the play. He told me that there rock ram set up would eliminated my steering problems. My question is ,has any one put the rock ram in there trucks. Did it improve steering. Iwould like to try but am reluctant to spend another $300+ dollars. Sorry for the long reply. Thanks

Gregg, Thanks for the note on the AGR. sorry to hear it has not fixed your problem.

I beleave that some of the saginaw box's have different turn ratio's. an example is say 2 turns of the wheel to get from full left to full right and some are say 3 turns to go from full left to full right. I found this out once when looking for a box for a landcruiser I was converting to power steering. since I was putting oversides tire and locking diff's on it I went and found a lower geared steering box off a 1982 impala. the lower gear ratio makes it easier to turn the larger tires Its real responsive and has no play. I don't know what the dodge uses or what the AGR boxes are. have you looked into this?? How many turns does it take to turn your wheel to get the from full left to full right?
