Searched the forums, digested all the info, but need some help since I have got to modify George, I know I can't do much and keep any semblance of my warranty... that being said... Air boxes, AFE vs. Scotty vs. X-intake, any thoughts appreciated. Exhaust mods, I know our mufflers are extremely restrictive, other than an entire replacement, what do you suggest??? At this point I'm looking for a happy cool running engine, not necessarily more power;) As far as the warranty goes, of course I'd keep the OE parts, and warranty work is Extremely dealer specific..... but..... The air box is easy enough to put back, but what could they possibly void because of an aftermarket muffler???? That being said... you BOMBERS are bad, bad people, I'm already wondering just what my warranty really means to me:p You are every bit as evil as Sams Club, Costco, and Camping World, I can't step foot in these places without dropping a t least 200 bucks!!!:{ anyway... thanks in advance:D

Keep that warranty, until these TSB'S are taken care of. IF you

have A early 03 like mine,check your front/rear end's for oil level

and if you have the stamped steel alt. bracket, look for a crack

across the top!You might still need your Warranty,The oil level

in the rear Axel is out of reach trough the fill plug. In my 03 and

you can bet I will use that warranty if the rear end go's out,

this is with over 7,000 miles on this truck! GWD

I went with a straight through muffler and resonater on mine and it sounds great. Still get to enjoy that 03 quiet but hear it a little also. IMO what seperates the various intakes are mostly looks and price. Im thinking any one of em flows more than most of us are going to need. Oh, and I have fought a denied warranty and it wasnt nearly as difficult as DC/dealers would like for you to believe. You need only get an attorney to start the process the rest you can do on your own.

What is the size pipes going into and out of the OEM muffler? Is it welded into the whole exhaust pipe, so it would have to be cut out? What are the pipes and muffler made of?

As asked above, would replacing the muffler with an aftermarket one or a piece of straight pipe have any effect on the warrantee?

Thanks.

The pipe leaves the turbo at 4" and knuckles down to 3. 5 within about an inch of the turbo. From there it remains 3. 5 to the muffler which has a 3. 5" inlet. It leaves the muffler at 4" and remains that way to the discharge. This is assuming a non cat exhaust, I have no idea what those may be. Its possible you might be able to reuse the 4" aft portion. Folks have got em out alive (sans cutting) but since I have no intention of ever putting it back on mine was introduced to Mr. Sawzall. I cant recall one post where someone said they liked the sound of the 03s straight piped, just an FYI. As for the warranty, its a tough call but you should be prepared to be your own warranty station if you want to bomb.

I just replaced my factory exhaust with a Diesel Dynamics 4" system and it sounds awesome. As far as the factory muffler I think it technically exits at 3. 5" and opens up about 2" later to the 4" tailpipe section.

I'm trying to decide what to do on the intake side as well. To me the Scotty 3 looks to be the best. It draws air from the stock fender hole as well as a forward facing intake that goes beside the radiator. I like that the filter is fully enclosed unlike the other intake systems. The Scotty also has the provision for the filter minder. I plan on doing a turbo soon, probably Diesel Dynamics and just need to make sure the entire system will work together.

What is a good, less restrictive muffler that can replace the stock without major mods? At this point, I can't afford a complete exhaust system but may be able to swing a muffler.

mbaston, You took the words right out of my mouth.

I don't know about you but, I want a little more turbo "noise" and a little more exhaust "noise". For as little as possible right now. Later I would like to get duals that exit in the rear.

Has anyone taken the silensor ring out of the turbo on a new 03? My 95 didn't have one and I liked the sound. You can tell what the engine is doing better when you can hear it.

Sounds like this weekend's 15 minute bombing project! I hate it stock and I've got to start somewhere.

Thanks for all the help... I've got a Scotty III on the way, I'll keep the stock box as well, just in case I have any warranty work done, also about that silencer ring... good luck... I'm fairly competent mechanically, and I can't get that thing out to save my life, tried 3 times, ring gap is at the top of the turbo, so I can't see it, and have had no luck going by feel  anyway, thanks for all the info!!

Yea, I feel better. I am not the only one that can't get that #$$% ring out! I spent a 1/2 hour on it. Makes me feel real stupid. I can rebuild a jeep from the frame up but can't remove a stupid ring. :{

Can adding an aftermarket air cleaner or removing the silenser ring effect the warrantee? I could see if the engine was damaged by dirt and they blamed the new air cleaner, but by just removing it, you would not automatically void the warrantee -- would it?
