i am looking to find a good air compressor and tank to put on my truck so i can run air lines to the front and back bumpers with quick connects on each end. the problem is what is a good compressor that wont break the bank. i was thinking 100% duty cycle. now if i cut the pump off will all the air drain out of the tanks. the reason for the on board air is so in the future i can get some air bags and some train horns. has any body done this and have directions or is there some sort of kit out there to do all this?

Thanks

oh my thats a bit much but that does look lik a good one but shoot if i can save enough for a goerend its not totally out of the question

That Kilby, with your CTD powering it, will run a jobsite just about.
Google ( or search here on TDR) for Extreme Aire or Extreme Air Magnum compressors. They are excellent high duty cycle duty, 12 volt compressors... many people also like Air Zenith compressors. Via Air has been making automotoive compressors for a LONG time, and they are ,mostly reliable and economical, but do not necessarily have the duty cycle of the others I mentioned.
It depends on the toys and/or use as to what CFM and duty cycle you will want to buy. Duty cycle and reliabity, as well as amp draw , ease of mounting and plumbing, and noise, is what it is all about to me. I ahve not bought mine yet, but will probably be an Extreme Aire.

Let us know what you decide to go with.

i built my system with 2 viair compressors, i started with 1 and add the 2nd a few yrs later. i then got a tank from the trailer of a semi trailer for the holding tank. here are some pictures i hope they help. if you shop on ebay you can find a lot of new things cheap.

i am trying to figure out how to upload the pics on the thread, when i do i will post them

you can visit my site. i just put the pictures on there as i could not figure out how to on here...

I was gifted a VIAR 380C Compressor, complemented with a 5 Gallon Air Tank and Hadley Air Horns from E-Bay, and Square D Pumptrol 200 PSI Pressure switch as the major components.
Assorted other Parts include In-Line AGU Fuse Holder and 30Amp Fuse for 6AWG Tinned Marine Battery Cables, 4 SMC Male 1/4" x3/8" Tube Quick Disconnect Fittings for the 3/8" DOT Air Line Hoses, Cable Actuated Drain Valve (1/4" NPT Male), 200 PSI Safety Valve, 30 AMP Relay wired to Ignition Hot Cigar Lighter with a switch in the storage bin under the AC Controls to permit power to the Compressor. Plus assorted air line Fittings and a T to lash together the air lines from the Tank to the Pressure Switch, Horns, and Courtesy Quick Connect at the bumper.

I have one courtesy "Push to connect" Quick Coupling hidden under the rear bumper. I drilled a hole in one of the Bumper Brackets to accommodate it along with the Male Quick connect to the air hose.

The Compressor and Horns are under Passenger side outside the frame with custom made brackets for the horns. The 5 Gallon Air Tank fit under the front passenger side of the Truck bed.

I keep forgetting to take Pictures when I have the truck up on the Lift...

Have been quite happy with my extreme outback unit. My extremeaire has been on 5+ years so far. If I had to do it again I might choose the magnum

Products : Extreme Outback

Also the tank does not depressurize unless you have a leak somewhere.

I run a pair of Viairs in my bed box, no issues and both are rated at 100% Duty Cycle. When we 'Play' with the horns they get a work out. With about 7. 5 gallons of storage at 150 psi they will air up about any tire in short order. I haven't tried to run air tools from it yet (probably won't have a need to either) but they keep the air bags up and the horns blowin'.

I Have run my Viair 450C for 5 years with no problems. Air up my 37"s and runs my train horns. I think they are very well built, make sure you get a 100% duty cycle unit.

The Kilby is great but you'd need to use it a lot to justify the price. Besides I think he has shut his doors, or is about to. I had the new Warn STC and it was OK but a little weak. So I found a way to fit their dual piston compressor in my bed on the 06 (the stc is going in my wife's jeep). Haven't got it running yet. It looks to be quite the unit and a good price. Give it a looks see. I'll let you know how it performs.

I am on my 2nd rig with a Viair 450C in it.

I used to run tanks, but don't anymore. . It ends up taking more air than the tanks have to fill tires, and it makes it slower.
