I have been told and have seen old posts that talk about an Air compressor that bolts right up to the CTD in my 93 dodge but I can't find a lot of details about it... .

I have heard you can find trucks in junkyards that have the 5. 9 as well as this air compressor... ...

I would like to know if this is true that there is a air compressor that bolts up to the 5. 9 as well as any problems it may cause... .

I'm also interested in what kind of vehicle I would have to look in to find the air compressor.

Thanks

James

James,

I've been looking into an air system as well. I have also heard that there may be one that bolts up somewhere around the vacuum pump, or between it and the power steering pump, but I haven't found it yet. I'm more leaning towards a stand-alone heavy duty electric one that will fill a big air tank and air bag suspension, like an Oasis. I'm planning to run a secondary battery that will power the compressor via diode. The battery will be recharged by the alternator. I don't have much more that this, but I'm still researching.

The bolt up pump you mentioned is the one I am looking for info on.

I have been told that it and a storage unit could easily fill my tires after Off-Roading as well as run some tools. .

Thanks for the input

Hey guys, I looked into the compressor that runs off the timing gears, like you guys are wondering about. They do exist, the problem is in the dodge trucks the motor mount is right behind the steering pump. It will not allow you to install the compressor too. Also on tractor trailers these compressors alone are more expensive than the Oasis unit. This is what I have learned on this subject.

On another note, someone posted on here about a pump drive for a snow plow hydraulic pump. Another guy added to the post, he has on his truck a pulley that replaces the fan drive pulley. It has a v belt groove in it right ahead of the serpentine pulley to drive an additional v belt to run the plow pump. My thoughts were to acquire one of these pulleys and then run a compressor off of it. One identical to the pump on the Oasis unit. I would have to build the brackets and then mount the pump.

My buddy runs the same pump on his old ford he off roads. It is the identical Air conditioning pump ford used in the 70's and he modified it to compress air. With a small tank this thing will run air tools, and fill tires easily and QUICKLY!!

Maybe you guys can tell me if I am on the right track.

Many 70's and 80's vehicles used a small York a/c compressor that would work for what you want. It has a sealed oiling system and is used by many of the jeepers.

I am doing it on my blazer and even got the pump, Just have to make a bracket. .

Where do you plan on mounting it in the dodge??

Anyone seen one done?? You have me courious now...

A friend of mine has a ISB in his motorhome (with air brakes) so I know it's definitely designed to have one... but clearing the engine compartment will definitely prove to be the most difficult part.

Brad Kilby at Onboard air has kits for the 24v and a lot of information about using the York A/C compressors. Do the 1st gens use a 4 bolt fan hub or a screw on fan clutch?, the Cummins part # for a 7" 4 bolt pulley that goes in front of the serpentine belt to fit my B5. 9 industrial engine fan hub is 3919624. The Kilby kits use a special alternator pulley to drive the compressor. The following links are a home made mount, but the kilby mount is similar. Maybe something similar would work on a 1st gen?

Yes, there are a lot of b-series engines that run the gear driven compressors. They are expensive, use engine coolant and oil, and take up space. For hydraulic power, I would consider researching an aftermarket pump and used it instead of the factory set-up. You will have to run a remote hydraulic tank, but many of the RV's and bigger trucks that run b's and C's use these pumps. I think that TRW makes them. Would be nice to drive a winch or a remote hydraulic air compressor :)

Space is not an issue unless it wont fit.....

And I wouldn't be buying the air compressor new I would be junkyarding it.....

That is why I was wondering what kind of vehicles have the b5. 9 as well as the air compressor already together..... That way I could get all the parts and pieces off of one vehicle to insure I have everything.....

Has any one done this to a first gen before... . or even attempted it?????

I once rented a Case loader with a direct drive compressor, also Ford F650 and larger with air brakes. I think you also need a compact power steering pump with a remote reservoir. There are several threads about this in the 2nd gen forum, you might try a search there or in general diesel.

JBurghard,

Reading old threads about onboard air. Did you ever accomplish installing an gear drive air pump on your truck?
