I recently subscribed to TDR after purchasing my first diesel, the Cummins HO in my 2002 3500. I LOVE the site and can't get away from it, but I am wondering if anyone has info to share on air compressors to run air horns, pneumatic tools, etc... Read article in FourWheeler and like the Outback for 12V, but is there one that runs off the engine (similar to what buses use to run air brakes)??????

PS. NEVER BUY GAS AGAIN!!!!

I was also looking into the Outback compressor, I talked to Ray at Currie Ent. (rear ends) and he sold me the one that they offer and it is the same one that is OEM equipment in the HUM Vees for the military. About the same price but a much nicer unit in my opinion, I sure love mine, its on my 70 Bronco and i have been thinking about ordering another one for the Ram. They also have some compact air tanks that are very well made.

bschmidt:

There is a Cummins factory air compressor set up for air brakes. The problem with Dodge is that the power steering and vacuum pumps are driven by that accesory drive. There is not enough room to install the compressor and the p/s pump. I am collecting the parts needed to do this, but it will require a ZF p/s pump from a F**D F650 and a remote fluid reservior. Because your truck has hydra-boost brake booster all you need the vacuum for is the a/c and front axle (4x4). The vacuum can be handled by the electric pump that F**D uses. I currently have a Grove air compressor on board for my air horns.

I have an engine driven pump and it's a pia. Have to start the engine everytime you want air. If I were to do it again I'd look into these new electric compressors the low-rider guys are using for their suspension. Some pretty cool stuff. Heres a 3/4hp 100% duty cycle at http://www.blowjax.com/

Good work Larry! I think you're right that the Low Riders are doing the research on air compressors and related technology. I found the following site via your link. It's lower prices for bulk purchases. I'll bet we could get a kit designed for our needs and get a great price... Do I smell a group purchase followed by a new product from Genos? :D

Let's go on the blowjax!!

This looks like a great way to go. ;) If ten or more want them, I'll setup the deal. Email me at -- email address removed -- if you want in, for price, or any other ?. I'm working on getting Paypal setup so I can accept BOMBing cards:D Give me a shout if you want one. This compressor, with their solenoid kit looks like a good setup, along with a air tank from Wally world for reserve.
