My AC compressor is making a noise when it's cold. It goes away when the AC is engaged. Sounds like a bad bearing. The front of the clutch is covered with rust dust. Does this sond like I need a new compressor, clutch, or a bearing? What's replaceable on the compressor? I thought I'd get me a belt for a non-AC model and take care of it in the spring, but the tensioner pulley is backward for this application (w/AC tensioner pulley runs on the BACK of the belt, w/o AC runs on the INSIDE of the belt).

A/C clutch

My A/C went south last spring. It started making a clinking sound. Had it looked at... ... . the clutch had fryed and it caused the front seal in the compressor to go.

I ordered the whole assembly from the local DC dealer, $470, had it replaced and recharged.

My truck is a 24v if it makes a difference.

Probably the clutch faceing as the bearing is still turning when clutch is engaged. You should be able to get complete clutch assy. (aftermarket) for under three bills if you change it yourself, everything is held in place by snap rings except the clutch face, bolt in center hole. They usually come of pretty easy, might need a small puller for the bearing but be sure you dont pull against the compressor shaft, you can use something like a 1-1/2" pipe cap to protect the shaft. bg

OK fellas, I've got a new clutch on the desk in front of me. I plan to replace it tomorrow. I have one question, what am I supposed to do with these shims? I guess that's what they are, they're little washers and the kit lists them as 8 different part numbers. And just when I thought this might be simple... .....

shims

They are the last thing to go on before the clutch disc, put them all on and push the disk on, measure the gap between the disc and plate and remove enough shims to have . 030 inch(specs are . 016 to . 031 inch) clearance between disc and plate. bg
