Howdy Men... .

My A/C clutch is wobbling wildly!. .

Won't kick in but once in a while... ... . #@$%!

Is it possible to remove the clutch assy... and still drive the truck... or is that nut that holds on the clutch... . hold the whole assy on..... pully and all??

was going to use it for a reference,to try to locate the CORRECT ONE...

you know the parts houses these days... ... if you don't have the part wth you. . more than likele they'll sell you the wrong one!!

if ya don't have it... . the D. A. F... ... . is WAY to HIGH!!

Anybody have a clue??

You should be able to remove the clutch - if you've got the proper puller. Some clutches don't require anything but loosening the nut, not sure about that one. The pulley does not come off with the clutch, is normally snapringed to the compressor nose so you can still drive it without the clutch.

Buy a belt for a truck with out A/C. Then move the compressor out of the way, put in the other belt. This way it's still driveable. The belt is routed different, and shorter on non-A/C trucks. Then you can fight with it at your leisure. ;)

I noticed a similar prob with my truck when I got it. The AC was flat but still had a few PSI in it. I did a 'dirty retrofit' R134 charge to it and noticed the outer clutch plate sitting at an angle when the compressor was not running. If it was running, it would slip a bit, but was steady. I tightened up the nut in the center well of the outer clutch disc (15mm?) and that solved the problem. I grabbed the outer clutch section with a very large ChannelLock pliers and did the tightening.

Hope this helps. Mine has held for almost a full summer of AC so far.

clutch

If you go to buy a new one, you will find that the price is very close to that of a complete compressor with a clutch. If you can do the recharge yourself just put the whole thing on and forget it. Remember, that clutch is the same age as the compressor and you don't know how soon it may go out.

When the clutch on my 93 A/C went, I found that you have to buy the whole compressor. Clutch only was not available at CarQuest, NAPA, Advance, etc...

Try O'Reilly. They have some A/C stuff N/A elsewhere. And the parts stores should also loan you the tool to pull the clutch. But before you replace the clutch, put a dial indicator on the spindle of the compressor (the shaft that the clutch is on) and make certain that it's not bent. If it is bent, replace the whole compressor with clutch.
