My compressor will kick in for only a few seconds at a time-it will not hold itself in long enough to do any good. This just started happening. Truck is an 02. What controls this function?

Low on Freon more than likely, check the charge/pressures if you have a set of R-134 gauges, or take it to an A/C Shop. I can't remember if the Dodge's have a sight glass on the accumulator, can't look at mine at the moment. If it does and the sight glass has bubbles in it or is cloudy, you need freon. There is a switch in the low pressure line that cycles the compressor. You can jump the connector and see if it runs, but be careful, running the compressor without enough freon is BAD for the compressor!!! Most automotive A/C systems leak a little, o-rings usually :D

Since these problems just started??? My guess is the compressor is going off on the low pressure switch. Meaning your system is probably low on refrigerant. However, if your condenser coil is clogged with bugs or whatever it may be going off on the high pressure switch. Clean the condenser with a good degreaser and rinse out w/garden hose pressure. Then try it. If same situation continues, get it to someone that can check the refrigerant system for you.
