Mine does this occaisionally. I turn it all the way off, then back to air and it works. I believe they have a vaccuum controled actuator that may be going or a line leak. Good luck,

The defrost is the default if you lose the vacuum. So turning off and back on gets things recycled for awhile but you will someday need to find the problem part or leak.
 
Mine done that - when I got it back from a dealer filter change. Seems they had accidentally pulled off the vac hose. Quick and easy fix.
 
There are two vacuum fittings that cause problems, the T in middle on edge of windshield cowl. And the fitting by PCM, that tends to lean to close to Turbo outlet pipe, check those for leaks, also one on top of vacuum pump.
