I just changed both canisters on my 2003, done this before, never had a problem. Don't recall having to pre-fill. Truck ran for 5 seconds then quit. I've let the pump run several times then tried to start, no start. Fuel is in the water separator canister. Should I just keep switching it off and then turning key to let pump run ?

Thanks

Not sure about the AirDog, but when I change my filters (Mopar SDFK, factory filter, and GDP MK-2) I have to bump the starter at least 4 times and let the pump run until it stops in order to fill all the filters. I bump the starter, wait until I hear the pump stop, then repeat 4-5 times. Truck starts fine after that.

Bumping the starter will run the pump for ±30 seconds if you have the relay triggered by the OEM fuel pump relay. Bump the starter 3-4 times and try again.

Yes, thats normal. The key point is you changed both filters. No problem putting the secondary filter on dry. But, you should prefill the primary water separator/filter to allow quicker priming. Thats a lot of air to work out. I prefill my Baldwin separator filter about 70% to minimize spilling and put my Donaldson filter on dry, cycle the pump 3 times then start. Even then it may die once. The separator filter can be left on much longer, probably 3 times longer than the Donaldson filter I run.

Thanks for the help, I'll sure pre-fill from now on. Never had this much trouble. I cheated and gave it a quick short shot of starting stuff, it fired right off, never missed. I suppose the age on the truck has something to do with it, too. Batteries had plenty of juice, it was turning over fast enough, I thought.

I wouldn't bother prefilling. If you prefill the middle you are pushing unfiltered fuel thru your system and if you fill from the outside it is very slow. Just bump the starter a few times and that should bleed the system.

I also wouldn't use ether, especially with the grid heater hooked up. Ether is hard on rings.

I change 3 filters at once, never prefill and only bump the starter twice. It fires and never misses a beat.

Thanks, the ether was a very last resort. I've run Cummins in my shrimp trawler for 35 plus years, I know the stuff is not healthy. I had turned the key and waited for the pump to stop ticking, then tried to crank at least a half dozen times. I charged the batteries to be sure I had a fast turning starter. One very short pop of ether while the starter was spinning and it fired up immediately.

I read somewhere that older tired injectors might cause this problem, wondering if I need to start saving spare 50 dollar bills for that ordeal. The shop I used to use was sold, new owner hasn't impressed me at all. I could ask the other guy a question and get a straight no BS answer, I wouldn't ask this guy if the sun was out.

The ticking sound is not the pump. You actually have to "bump" the starter - as in turn the key for a sec until the starter engages and then turn the key back. You will hear the sound of the pump then.

Prefilling not necessary, just do the key on/off it may take 5-6 minutes counting wait cycles, AH64ID Yes either and grid heaters on is a NO NO, but claiming either is hard on rings is a little over statement, ( yes if you spray for long terms) Heck check out the tractor pulls it takes a WHOLE can of JD either just to get them to run. Actually John Deere either the best either their is.

Don't waste your money on those water separating filters they don't work on today's fuel, If you can't find a aqua-zorb or capsulation filter (water) that will fit, just spin on another good mic filter.
